Timberwolves Top Hornets 125-110 To Secure Third Straight Win

Despite LaMelo Ball's impressive performance, the Hornets suffer eighth consecutive loss against the Timberwolves.

The Minnesota Timberwolves showcased their dominance on the court, defeating the Charlotte Hornets 125-110 on March 5, 2025. This win marked the Timberwolves' third consecutive victory, solidifying their status as serious contenders this season.

Leading the Timberwolves were Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels, each contributing 29 points to the scoreboard. Julius Randle added 25 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds, demonstrating his all-around skill set. Despite LaMelo Ball's best efforts for the Hornets, scoring 28 points alongside 10 rebounds and 6 assists, his performance was not enough to uplift the team, which suffered their eighth loss in as many games.

This recent game at the Spectrum Center highlighted the persistence of the Timberwolves, who demonstrated effective shooting from beyond the arc, netting 21 three-pointers throughout the contest. Edwards particularly shone brightly, sinking 6 of his 13 attempts from three-point range. Even with Rudy Gobert absent from the lineup, Minnesota's offensive strategy thrived, contributing to their improved record of 34-29.

The Hornets, still struggling, have now utilized 31 different starting lineups this season and hold the unfortunate record of losing 11 out of their last 12 games. Despite the discouraging numbers, Hornets' coach Charles Lee emphasized the importance of maintaining competitive spirit and focusing on daily improvement. “I think there’s just a continued emphasis on maintaining our competitive edge,” Lee remarked, stating how motivation should not be dictated solely by their record.

Looking back on the game, the Timberwolves exploded out of the gate, scoring 39 points in the first quarter and maintaining the lead throughout the game. Nonetheless, the Hornets managed to close the gap to 65-58 at halftime, showing some signs of life with improved shooting, especially from long range. Despite two strong quarters of play from Ball and Miles Bridges, who together took nearly half of Charlotte's shot attempts—48 out of 95—their efforts fell short.

Bridges, who ended the game with 23 points, addressed the psychological aspect of the game, noting, “Yeah, you’ve got to keep trying, but you’ve got to find a way over the hump. Trying is cool, but it’s what you’ve got to do for the whole game.” With frustration building, many players expressed the challenges they face as they battle through this difficult period.

During the game, Lee's coaching strategy was evident. He consistently interacted with players, including providing specific instructions to Ball. Lee aims to refine each player's game by emphasizing individual performance goals. “Can we be more sharper, more poised and take those turnovers down and cut it in half?” he challenged his players, highlighting the need for focus and discipline amid adversity.

The Timberwolves' defense played a significant role, holding the Hornets to 12-for-42 from three-point range, contrastingly showcasing their own capability from beyond the arc. This defensive effort, coupled with the offensive firepower, ensured they would take home the victory and sweep the season series against Charlotte.

With every game, speculation grows on how the Hornets will adjust moving forward, particularly as they aim to crack out of the rut they find themselves entrenched within. Having consulted video footage and engaged players through discussion sessions, Coach Lee hopes to instill confidence and clarity during practices and games alike. “We need both—the visual and also walking through it to feel it on the court,” he said.

The road to recovery is steep for Charlotte, yet there remains time for recovery before their season concludes. Mark Williams, another Hornets’ player, expressed the need for collective effort: “If we can get a win next game against the best team, maybe we can turn things around.”

They will face tough competition moving forward, particularly as they next take on the high-flying Cleveland Cavaliers. For the Timberwolves, their eyes remain set firmly on the playoffs, fueled by tonight's display of depth and skill. Their mix of experienced veterans and younger talents might just be the recipe for success as the season continues to push toward its conclusion.
