Timberwolves Rout Jazz For Eighth Consecutive Loss

Anthony Edwards dominates as NBA playoff hopes wane for Utah Jazz amid struggles.

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Jazz suffered their eighth consecutive loss on Thursday, January 30, 2025, falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves 138-113 at the Delta Center. This defeat not only highlighted the Jazz's current struggles but also showcased the Timberwolves' growing momentum as they secured their fifth straight victory.

Anthony Edwards put on an electrifying performance for Minnesota, scoring 36 points, dishing out 11 assists, and blocking three shots during his 35 minutes on the court. Edwards particularly shone during the third quarter, scoring 16 of his points and leading the Timberwolves to outscore the Jazz 44-22 during this pivotal period.

The Jazz initially displayed promise, racing out to a 25-10 lead, fueled by Keyonte George's unexpected contribution off the bench, where he scored 23 points on perfect 7-for-7 shooting. Yet, the team could not maintain their early advantage, as the Timberwolves took control and did not look back. Utah's record now stands at 10-36, solidifying their position as one of the worst teams this season.

Utah's coach, Will Hardy, addressed the difficulties facing the team, especially as they navigated their eighth loss, highlighting the struggle to play consistently well through all four quarters. “The third quarter is obviously where the game got away from us,” said Hardy. “A lack of attention to detail on some defensive rotations led to us being late.” Utah's performances have dwindled, and since their narrow nine-point loss to Oklahoma City Thunder last week, they have been outscored 502-429.

While the Jazz seem to be losing rhythm, Hardy remarked, “It's not as easy as just plug and play when guys are coming back from being injured and sick. There's a little bit of rhythm that's lost in those moments.”, which reflects the impact of recent injuries and lineup changes involving players returning from illness.

On the other side of the court, Minnesota seemed to thrive, even with their starting point guard Mike Conley sidelined due to injury. The Timberwolves showed they could function effectively as a unit, achieving 38 assists, matching their season high. Alongside Edwards, Rudy Gobert, facing his former team, contributed 16 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks, embodying the Timberwolves' defensive prowess.

The Timberwolves displayed significant efficiency, shooting 61.3% from the field and 55.3% from three-point range, outperforming the Jazz's 50.6% and 41.2%, respectively. This offensive outbreak from Minnesota came after they edged past the Phoenix Suns 121-113 the previous night, showcasing their confidence and skill.

Although the results are promising for Minnesota as they stand just half-game behind the Los Angeles Clippers for the sixth seed, concerns loom over Julius Randle’s health after he strained his groin late in the first half, sidelining him for the rest of the game. The Timberwolves already face challenges with offensive consistency, and Randle's potential absence could prove detrimental as the season progresses. “We won’t offer updates on Randle until Friday at the earliest,” said the Timberwolves' staff, indicating uncertainty around his status moving forward.

The Jazz now look to bounce back as they prepare to host the Orlando Magic on February 1, 2025. Following their eight losses, Utah hopes the rebound game can shift the team's momentum, but they face intense pressure as they gear up for eight games over the next 15 days against teams above .500.

While the season may seem bleak for Jazz fans, the team appears focused on development rather than immediate results. Coach Hardy reminded the team, “Nobody feels sorry for us. We don’t feel sorry for ourselves, and we just keep pushing.”

Despite their struggles, Keyonte George emphasized his commitment to maintaining strong performances, acknowledging, “I just want to continue to trust my work,” indicating the positive mindset among the players as they adapt to the current season's dynamics.

The Minnesota Timberwolves will return home to face the Washington Wizards on February 3, 2025, as they look to extend their winning streak, whereas the Jazz fans can only wait and hope for improvement when they next take the court against the Magic.
