Thailand has proudly announced record-breaking international tourist arrivals for 2024, eclipsing the target of 35 million visitors and generating over 1.8 trillion Baht in tourism revenue. This milestone not only marks the country's impressive recovery from prior setbacks but also sets the stage for what is being labeled as the ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year’ of 2025.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), from January 1 to December 27, 2024, the country welcomed 35,047,501 visitors. TAT Governor Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool attributed this remarkable achievement to strategic government initiatives aimed at enhancing Thailand's profile as a premier global tourism destination.
“Thailand has welcomed 35,047,501 visitors, a remarkable achievement for our tourism sector,” stated Ms. Kiatphaibool, highlighting the collaborative efforts underlying this success.
Several key policies played pivotal roles this year, particularly the visa exemption granted to citizens from 93 countries, allowing for 60-day stays without prior arrangements. This simple yet effective move significantly facilitated travel, attracting visitors from around the world. The removal of the TM.6 immigration forms at 16 border crossings streamlined entry even more, making it easier for tourists to explore the wonders of Thailand.
The aviation sector was instrumental as well, as international airlines resumed and launched numerous routes from both primary and secondary cities abroad. Total airline seat capacity expanded to 47 million, marking a 26% increase compared to the previous year. During the peak December holiday season, over 311 new flights were scheduled, resulting in more than 70,000 additional seats available for eager travelers.
High-profile events contributed significantly to Thailand's appeal, creating buzz and excitement. Major celebrations such as the Amazing Thailand Countdown 2024 and the Maha Songkran World Water Festival, alongside concerts featuring well-known artists, attracted diverse groups of visitors. Notably, iconic locations highlighted through popular films and television series drew tourists eager to experience the magic of their favorite shows and characters firsthand.
This sustained interest has facilitated improved air connectivity across both short-haul and long-haul markets. Noteworthy short-haul routes saw expanded access, with new flights introduced from Northeast Asia (including cities such as Beijing and Hualien), ASEAN countries, and even South Asia (with new services from Kolkata and Chennai). Long-haul routes were bolstered as well, with airlines like British Airways and Thai Airways launching flights from cities like London and Brussels, respectively.
Looking forward to 2025, Thailand has ambitious plans aimed at capitalizing on the previous year’s success. TAT intends to focus on hosting world-class events, promoting unique cultural experiences, and enhancing visitor conveniences. The overarching goal is to attract between 36 and 39 million international visitors and generate up to 2.23 trillion Baht in tourism revenue.
Thailand's vision to establish itself as the leading tourism hub within the region is firmly grounded. The country is dedicated to providing extraordinary experiences for tourists, all of which are anchored by sustainable growth principles. This focus underlines the importance of not just attracting visitors but also ensuring their impact positively influences the local economy and communities.
With the groundwork laid out, 2025 promises to be another landmark year for Thailand's tourism sector. Enhanced connectivity, vibrant cultural showcases, and unforgettable experiences combine to solidify the nation’s status as one of the globe's most enticing destinations for travelers.
