Stars Shine At 75th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen Rehearsals

Leading performers showcase their talent and fashion weeks before the iconic New Year’s Eve event.

On December 28th, the countdown began for the much-anticipated 75th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen, as rehearsals took place at the NHK Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo. The annual New Year's Eve music event, which will be broadcast on December 31st from 7:20 PM to 11:45 PM, is expected to showcase some of Japan's most beloved artists.

Iconic idol group Sakurazaka46 made their appearance during the rehearsal, decked out in eye-catching fashion. Dressed in deep red dresses with navy accents, the group displayed frilly stand-up collars and large buttons which added to their playful aesthetic. The members complemented their stunning outfits with thick-soled short boots, showing off their legs as they prepared to perform their latest single, "Jigou Jitoku," released earlier this year.

During the rehearsal, glimpses of their sound-checking process were shared, creating excitement for their performance on the big night. Hosting the event will be seasoned personalities, including popular entertainer Hiroyuki Ariyoshi, actress Kanna Hashimoto, and announcer Nahoko Suzuki from NHK.

Meanwhile, the 11-member girl group ME:I also took the stage at the NHK Hall, marking their debut at the Kōhaku event. The group's leader, MOMONA, caught attention with her striped short top and pants, flaunting her midriff. RAN, the sub-leader, opted for a trendy houndstooth patterned jacket paired with a mini skirt and tall boots, highlighting her stylish flair. Demonstrative of their youthful and vibrant spirit, the group happily showcased heart poses as they rehearsed their song "Click" from their debut single.

Traditionally, this event not only serves as entertainment but also as a significant cultural touchstone for many Japanese families on New Year's Eve. The Kōhaku Uta Gassen is so prominent, it’s common for families to gather around their TVs, enjoying the vibrant performances as they prepare for the New Year.

Adding another layer of excitement to the rehearsals, the renowned singer Yoshimi Tendo appeared with her unique ensemble, wearing bright blue dotted attire complemented by black tunics and pants. The colorful buttons on her vest caught the eye, as she prepared to deliver her popular song from 2002, "Anta no Hanamichi," during the performance. Her appearance, too, is generating buzz as her attire reflects her artistic persona.

Another notable moment occurred on December 29th when folk singer Iruka paired up with fellow artist Kōsetsu Minami, discussing their personal Kōhaku traditions. For Iruka, who is making her return after 32 years, the experience is nostalgic. "On New Year's Eve, I always make multiple side dishes like Yatsugashira and prepared them, all the whilst watching Kōhaku. It’s such a tradition for me," she shared with joy. This year, as she prepares for her performance, she explained this time, she had to pre-cook as she wouldn’t be able to complete her usual Kōhaku festivities.

The Kōhaku Uta Gassen introduces both veteran performers and fresh faces from the music industry, all contributing to the charm and excitement of the event. The blend of tradition and contemporary music is sure to captivate audiences. Performing artists are expected to make the 75th edition truly unforgettable.

Overall, the preparations are well underway, with multiple rehearsals ensuring smooth performances for all artists. With just days to go, anticipation is building around the event where the music lights up the Japanese New Year celebrations. The multi-host format, guided by the affable faces of Ariyoshi, Hashimoto, and Suzuki, is expected to deliver warmth and engaging commentary throughout the broadcast.
