Thailand Freezes Electricity Prices For Summer Relief

ERC maintains tariffs at 4.15 baht per unit to ease citizen costs

In a significant move to alleviate financial pressures on households, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) of Thailand has decided to maintain the electricity tariff at 36.72 satang per unit, resulting in an average electricity bill of 4.15 baht per unit for the upcoming period from May to August 2025. This decision was made during the ERC board meeting No. 12/2568 on March 26, 2025, and marks a continuation of the current rate, which has been a relief for many consumers during the hot season.

Dr. Phulpat Leesombatpaiboon, the Secretary-General of the ERC, confirmed this decision, stating that the board's resolution aligns with the proposal made by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). The fixed rate is expected to ease the burden on citizens as they navigate rising living costs. "The decision reflects our commitment to ensuring that electricity costs remain manageable for the public," Dr. Phulpat noted.

The ERC had previously opened a public consultation period from March 11 to March 24, 2025, inviting citizens to submit their opinions regarding the electricity tariff calculations for the upcoming months. A total of 33 proposals were received, with 29 of these directly addressing the proposed tariff, while others suggested alternative rates or posed questions unrelated to the tariff itself.

During the consultation, the feedback indicated a strong preference for maintaining the current rates rather than increasing them, reflecting the public's concern over financial stability during the ongoing economic challenges. The ERC has emphasized that the decision to freeze the tariff is also a response to these concerns.

This year, as Thailand enters its summer season, which began in late February and will last until mid-May, the ERC has also encouraged citizens to adopt energy-saving practices. Dr. Phulpat highlighted five key actions that residents can take to reduce their electricity consumption: unplugging appliances when not in use, turning off lights when leaving a room, setting air conditioning units to 26 degrees Celsius, switching to energy-efficient devices, and planting more trees to help cool homes naturally.

These measures are part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing electricity costs by an estimated 5% for users, thereby promoting sustainable energy consumption while also addressing the rising costs of living. The ERC plans to review these energy-saving strategies further, with additional adjustments to be implemented by April 26, 2025, to enhance the effectiveness of these recommendations.

In related news, the gold market is experiencing fluctuations, with prices hitting new record highs. On March 26, 2025, gold bullion was selling for 48,650 baht per baht weight, while gold ornaments were priced at 49,450 baht. However, by the end of the day, prices adjusted slightly, settling at 48,550 baht for bullion and 49,350 baht for ornaments, reflecting the volatile nature of commodity markets.

The government's decision to maintain electricity prices comes at a time when many citizens are hoping for reductions in utility costs as summer approaches. The ERC's commitment to keeping the rates stable has been met with a mix of relief and cautious optimism from the public. Many are still hopeful that further reductions might be possible in the future as the government continues to evaluate the economic landscape.

As the ERC continues to monitor the situation, it remains focused on balancing the needs of consumers with the operational costs of electricity generation. The board's decision to freeze tariffs is seen as a proactive measure to support households during a challenging economic period.

In conclusion, the ERC's announcement has provided a much-needed respite for consumers facing rising costs in other areas of their lives. With the summer heat approaching, maintaining stable electricity prices will be crucial for households across Thailand, allowing them to manage their budgets more effectively.
