In a significant move to ease the financial burden on passengers, Thai Smile Bus Company has announced a new fare calculation system aimed at reducing travel costs for the public. Effective April 11, 2025, this initiative aligns with the government’s policy to support citizens during challenging economic times.
Mr. Warawit Chanchanyan, the Executive Director of Thai Smile Bus Company Limited (TSB), explained that the updated fare structure was developed in consultation with the Department of Land Transport. The goal is to create a fare system that reflects the growing number of sub-bus stops and the diverse needs of passengers. This new approach emphasizes convenience and equality in fare pricing, especially in areas where travel costs can be significantly lower.
The adjustment involves a unique method of fare calculation. Passengers will now see their fares rounded up or down based on their boarding and alighting points. For instance, if a passenger boards at a minor stop, the fare will be calculated based on the nearest Main Bus stop that the bus has yet to reach. Conversely, when disembarking at a minor stop, the fare will round down to the last Main Bus stop passed. This system effectively lowers costs for passengers traveling between minor stops.
For example, a passenger traveling on bus number 2-38 (formerly route 8) from Makro Ladprao to the vicinity of Kasetsart University would previously have paid 20 baht. With the new fare calculation, that same journey will now cost only 15 baht, making public transport more affordable.
Moreover, passengers utilizing a HOP Card can benefit from the Daily Max Fare promotion, which allows unlimited travel for a maximum of 40 baht per day. If they need to switch between electric buses or ferries, the maximum fare is capped at just 50 baht for the day. This initiative is a part of TSB’s commitment to reducing the cost of living for Thai citizens.
In addition to fare adjustments, the Department of Land Transport has also taken steps to ensure safety during the upcoming Songkran festival, a time notorious for heavy traffic and accidents. Mr. Anukul Preechawanich, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, announced that from April 11 to 17, 2025, freight transport operators are encouraged to refrain from using their trucks to ease road congestion and enhance safety.
The department anticipates a surge in travel as many citizens return to their hometowns for the festival, which raises concerns about traffic density and potential accidents. To mitigate these risks, the Department of Land Transport has requested that transportation operators conduct thorough inspections of their vehicles and drivers during this busy period.
Operators who must use trucks during this time are required to adhere to specific guidelines, including maintaining legal speed limits, ensuring drivers take adequate rest, and conducting pre-trip vehicle inspections. Furthermore, all vehicles must be equipped with GPS systems to monitor their locations and movements.
Mr. Anukul highlighted that these measures are crucial for ensuring the safety of all road users during the festive season. He urged citizens to report any issues related to freight transportation during Songkran by contacting the Department of Land Transport hotline at 1584, which operates 24 hours a day.
With the dual initiatives of fare adjustments and enhanced safety measures, both Thai Smile Bus and the Department of Land Transport are taking proactive steps to ensure a more affordable and safer travel experience for all citizens during this busy period. As the Songkran festival approaches, these changes are expected to significantly alleviate the financial strain on families while promoting safer road conditions.
In conclusion, these measures reflect a broader commitment by the Thai government and transportation companies to prioritize the welfare of citizens, especially in times of economic difficulty. With the new fare structure and safety protocols in place, travelers can look forward to a more efficient and cost-effective public transport experience this festive season.
