California DMV Opens Offices For Real ID Appointments

Select DMV locations will assist residents with Real ID applications on May 17, 2025.

As the deadline for the Real ID approaches, select DMV offices across Los Angeles and Orange counties are stepping up to accommodate Californians eager to obtain this critical identification. On May 17, 2025, these offices will be open specifically for Real ID appointments, according to an announcement made by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) on Friday.

Despite the federal enforcement deadline having passed, DMV director Steve Gordon reassured residents that the DMV will continue to offer Real IDs for those who wish to secure one. “We’re making it easier for customers to upgrade by offering additional weekend appointments,” Gordon stated, highlighting the agency's commitment to facilitating the application process.

The selected DMV locations will operate on Saturday, May 17, by appointment only, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The offices designated for this special opening include:

  • Fullerton (909 W. Valencia Drive)

  • Glendale (1335 W. Glenoaks Blvd.)

  • San Clemente (2727 Via Cascadita)

  • Riverside East (6425 Sycamore Canyon Blvd.)

  • Thousand Oaks (1810 E. Avenida De Los Arboles)

  • West Covina (800 S. Glendora Ave.)

For residents who do not currently possess a Real ID, there is no immediate need to rush to the DMV. They can opt to wait until their driver’s license is due for renewal. Until then, other federally accepted documents, such as a valid U.S. passport or permanent resident card, can be used for boarding domestic flights.

But what exactly is a Real ID? The concept has been in the making for nearly two decades. In 2005, Congress passed legislation establishing security requirements for state-issued IDs, which must now meet specific criteria to be accepted for boarding federally regulated flights, entering nuclear power plants, and accessing certain federal buildings.

As of May 7, 2025, Americans will indeed need a Real ID or another accepted form of identification to fly. This includes the most common alternative, a valid U.S. passport. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), other accepted forms of ID include a U.S. passport card, DHS Trusted Traveler cards (such as Global Entry), and permanent resident cards.

It’s important to note that the TSA has indicated that accepted IDs could change without notice, so travelers are encouraged to verify their identification status before making travel plans.

For those looking to obtain a Real ID, the process begins online. Applicants can start by filling out the necessary forms and uploading required documents ahead of their visit to the DMV. Once the online application is completed, individuals will receive a confirmation code, which they must bring to their chosen DMV office.

To successfully obtain a Real ID, applicants need to provide:

  • Proof of identity, which can be a passport, original birth certificate, or permanent resident card.

  • Two documents proving California residency, such as utility bills, a lease agreement, or a tax return.

Wondering if you already have a Real ID? It’s quite simple to check. A California ID is classified as a Real ID if it features a star in the top right corner. For further details on the application process, residents are encouraged to visit the California DMV website.

With the deadline looming, many Californians are preparing for the transition to Real IDs. The DMV’s additional weekend appointments aim to alleviate the pressure on residents who may have delayed their applications. The agency is committed to ensuring that all eligible Californians can secure this important form of identification, which not only facilitates air travel but also enhances security measures across the board.

As the May 7 deadline draws nearer, the DMV’s proactive approach by opening select offices for appointments on May 17 is a timely response to the needs of the public. It’s an opportunity for those who have yet to upgrade their identification to do so without the stress of long wait times or overcrowded offices.

In summary, the Real ID initiative represents a significant step in enhancing security and streamlining identification processes across the country. Californians are encouraged to take advantage of the DMV’s extended hours and resources to ensure they are prepared for the upcoming requirements.
