Thai Film Lahn Mah Set For June Release

Acclaimed movie encourages audience participation for Japanese title through unique screening event

The Thai film Lahn Mah, which has garnered significant acclaim, particularly as Thailand's representative shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, is all set to be released nationwide on June 13, 2025. With its intriguing English title, How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, the film has already made waves domestically, achieving remarkable box office success, ranking second overall for the year of its release.

The narrative revolves around the complex relationship between a grandson and his elderly grandmother, encapsulating themes of love, greed, and familial bonds. The film's popularity during its initial run in Thailand back in April propelled it to unprecedented heights, being lauded as one of the biggest hits of the year.

Directed by Pat Boonnetipat, who previously contributed to the well-received television drama series Bad Genius, Lahn Mah has attracted significant attention for its heartfelt storytelling and engaging performances from its ensemble cast, which includes actors Putthipong Assaratanaakoon and Usha Seahmkoon. The film is expected to strike emotional chords with audiences, having already been described as one that's hard to watch without shedding tears.

Given the recent struggles faced by the international film market, particularly the lack of interest shown by audiences, the producers are approaching the film's Japanese release with innovative promotional strategies. One such initiative includes hosting a unique audience participate event—a title determination screening on January 22, 2025, at Akiba Theater, where attendees will have the opportunity to suggest potential Japanese titles for the film.

This trial will consist of screening the film, followed by audience feedback collected through surveys to settle on the most suitable Japanese title before the film's wider release. The film’s official social media accounts are actively inviting submissions for audience involvement until January 15, 2025, adding excitement to its promotional efforts.

The promotional visuals released showcase the protagonist and his grandmother sharing moments of joy, emphasizing the film’s core themes and warmth. The title area on the poster is currently empty, awaiting the results of the community voting.

Highlighting the film's remarkable feat at the Academy Awards, it marks a historical achievement as the first Thai film to reach such prestigious international recognition. The film stands not only as entertainment but also as potential cultural exchanges, as it brings Thai cinematic storytelling to global audiences.

With the support of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and distributed domestically by Unplugged, Lahn Mah is poised to captivate audiences beyond its home country, forging connections through its poignant exploration of universal themes.

The upcoming screening details are as follows:

  • Date: January 22, 2025
