Tesla has officially enabled 325 kW Supercharging at all V4 Supercharger locations across North America, significantly enhancing the efficiency of electric vehicle charging. The much-anticipated capability allows select electric vehicles to charge at accelerated speeds, though at present, the Tesla Cybertruck is the only model within the company able to fully utilize this advancement.
This update marks another milestone for Tesla’s Supercharger network, which has evolved steadily through multiple generations, with V4 standing as the latest iteration of this infrastructure. Previous versions, particularly V3 stations, offered maximum charging speeds of 250 kW. When V4 stations were initiated, they operated with the same infrastructure as their V3 counterparts, limiting their speed, even though the charging posts themselves were rated for higher outputs.
Now, after extensive testing and feedback, Tesla has expanded this higher charging speed capability to all V3+ stations, which combine updated V4 posts with V3 cabinets. This adjustment is part of Tesla’s commitment to improving the overall user experience for electric vehicle drivers across North America.
Reported on January 30, 2025, on X, the social media platform owned by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the announcement about the upgrades stated, "Tesla claims to be getting 325 kW of power from its V4 Supercharger DC fast-charging stations." While the Cybertruck currently boasts the necessary architecture to engage with the 325 kW power, several non-Tesla electric vehicles—such as the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6—can also benefit from the new capability, thanks to their 800V designs.
The improvements are still only partial, as present V4 stations are not yet equipped with the full physical systems intended for complete 800-volt charging scenarios. The charging increments made possible at these stations may only occur for brief moments—"maybe a minute or less by initial accounts," as noted by Tesla. Nonetheless, these brief high-power bursts can mean significant time saved, potentially shaving about five minutes off the Cybertruck's regular 40-minute charge from 10% to 80% capacity.
This strategic shift to higher charging speeds is also pivotal considering the wider automotive market's gradual transition to electric vehicles. Tesla manufacturers are acutely aware of the growing competition and the necessity to keep their offerings both desirable and practical for drivers.
