Madeleine McCann Suspect Refuses Police Interview Again

Christian Brückner, set for release from a German prison, rejects Metropolitan Police request as international investigation into Madeleine McCann’s 2007 disappearance continues without new breakthroughs.

Nearly two decades after Madeleine McCann vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, the case continues to grip the world’s attention. Now, as the prime suspect, Christian Brückner, prepares for his imminent release from a German prison, a new chapter unfolds—one marked by his steadfast refusal to speak with investigators, despite mounting international pressure and years of painstaking inquiry.

According to the BBC and multiple other outlets, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that Brückner, a 49-year-old German national, declined an interview request submitted through an international letter of request. The request was made ahead of his scheduled release this Wednesday, after serving a seven-year sentence for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz—the same resort town where three-year-old Madeleine disappeared in May 2007.

Brückner’s refusal is just the latest in a long line of obstacles that have dogged the investigation. Despite being the prime suspect in German and Portuguese probes since 2020 and 2022, respectively, he has never been charged in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance and continues to deny any involvement. “We have requested an interview with this German suspect but, for legal reasons, this can only be done via an International Letter of Request which has been submitted,” Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell of the Metropolitan Police said. “It was subsequently refused by the suspect. In the absence of an interview, we will nevertheless continue to pursue any viable lines of inquiry.”

For the McCann family, the lack of closure remains agonizing. Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, had left her and her siblings sleeping in their holiday apartment while they dined at a nearby restaurant, checking on the children periodically. At around 10 p.m. on May 3, 2007, Kate McCann discovered that Madeleine was missing, sparking a search that would become one of the most high-profile unsolved missing person cases in the world.

German prosecutors have pointed to evidence—including mobile phone data—suggesting that Brückner may have been in the vicinity when Madeleine vanished. According to The Independent, authorities have consistently maintained that they believe Brückner is responsible, though they have never been able to amass enough evidence to bring formal charges. The details of the alleged evidence remain closely guarded, fueling ongoing speculation and frustration among those following the case.

Brückner’s criminal history only deepens the intrigue. A drifter and convicted sex offender, he has prior convictions for sexually abusing children in 1994 and 2016. He spent significant time in the Algarve region between 2000 and 2017, and investigators have uncovered photographs and videos of him near the Barragem do Arade reservoir—about 30 miles from Praia da Luz—where searches were conducted in 2023. Still, no breakthroughs have materialized.

The June 2025 search near Lagos, Portugal, carried out jointly by German, Portuguese, and British authorities, is just the latest in a series of high-profile operations that have, so far, yielded little in terms of concrete leads. The BBC notes that the search focused on land between the McCanns’ holiday accommodation and addresses linked to Brückner, but again, no significant discoveries were made.

Adding to the complexity is the difference in how authorities from different countries approach the case. While German investigators officially suspect Brückner of murder, British police continue to treat Madeleine’s disappearance as a missing persons case. This divergence in legal frameworks has, at times, complicated international cooperation and fueled public confusion.

Brückner’s legal saga doesn’t end with the McCann case. In October 2024, he was cleared by a German court of unrelated sexual offences alleged to have occurred in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. Despite these acquittals, his status as the primary suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance remains unchanged.

Detective Chief Inspector Cranwell emphasized the ongoing commitment of the Metropolitan Police, stating, “For a number of years, we have worked closely with our policing colleagues in Germany and Portugal to investigate the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and support Madeleine’s family to understand what happened on the evening of 3 May 2007 in Praia da Luz.” He reiterated, “We can provide no further information while the investigation is ongoing.”

The investigation—known as Operation Grange—has been one of the most expensive and enduring in Scotland Yard’s history. Since its launch in 2011, Operation Grange has received over £13.2 million in funding, with an additional £108,000 secured from the UK government as recently as April 2025. Yet, despite the substantial resources invested, the case remains unsolved, and the fate of Madeleine McCann is still shrouded in mystery.

Public interest remains intense, with each new development reigniting debate and speculation. The refusal of Brückner to cooperate with authorities has only heightened scrutiny, leading many to wonder what—if anything—he might know about that fateful night in 2007. Meanwhile, the McCann family and their supporters continue to hold out hope for answers, even as the years slip by.

For investigators, the lack of an interview with Brückner is a setback, but not the end of the road. As Detective Chief Inspector Cranwell made clear, the Metropolitan Police are determined to pursue any viable lines of inquiry, working in tandem with their German and Portuguese counterparts. The hope, as ever, is that persistence will eventually yield the truth—no matter how elusive it has proven to be.

With Brückner’s release from prison imminent, the spotlight on this extraordinary case will only intensify. Yet, for all the headlines and speculation, the central question remains heartbreakingly simple: what happened to Madeleine McCann?
