On December 23, 2023, Takaki Oda, the adopted daughter of the late Japanese actor Ken Takakura, will make her appearance on the beloved talk show "Tetsuko's Room," aired on TV-Asahi. The show will mark the ten-year anniversary of Takakura's passing, and will spotlight Oda's memories of her time with the iconic star, whom she supported for 17 years.
Oda, who now heads Takakura Promotions, is expected to share untold stories of her late father figure, illustrating the depth of their bond and the simple, yet intimate moments they shared. Known for his humility and dedication to his craft, Takakura took great care to avoid letting anything disrupt his filming, including food. Oda would often prepare his favorite meats, ensuring they were both delicious and suitable for his health.
The audience will be treated to rare photographs capturing Takakura's unpretentious nature, alongside tales of his life, including his avowed love for dogs. Although he famously declared he would never own another dog after tragically losing one in a house fire, Oda shared how he cherished dog figurines, which he kept as companions around the house.
"He was very fond of dogs and would often look at dog encyclopedias," Oda recalled. "I thought it would brighten his mood if I brought home some dog figurines for him. He ended up loving them!" She referred to these figurines as the beloved 'companions' of their home.
During the program, Oda will also introduce some of these 'dogs' on set, which add color to the reminiscences of Takakura's life.
Oda's insights will not only reveal Takakura's distinguished character but will also highlight how she contributed to his happiness through his meals. "He was very conscientious about his diet due to his filming schedule. I made sure to integrate his favorite ingredients cleverly, ensuring he was nourished without compromising his health," Oda added.
Alongside her appearance on "Tetsuko's Room," Oda has recently published a photo essay titled "Takakura Ken’s Beloved Dining Table." This book encompasses the recipes they enjoyed together, as well as anecdotes from their everyday life.
Throughout the past decade, Oda has often reflected on the impact of their relationship, filled with shared meals and mutual respect. "Cooking for him was not just about feeding him; it was about sharing life," she said. "We shared around 13,000 meals during our 17 years together. That’s how integral food was to our bond. I often think of his laughter and how he savored each bite. He taught me to focus on the little moments."
Oda took it upon herself to document their culinary experiences, stating, "I wanted to represent those flavors he loved accurately; I traced back to what he enjoyed since childhood. His favorites included various meats, especially beef and pork, and plenty of home-style recipes. We’d recreate his favorites together. It helped me feel close to him, even now."
Looking back on the last ten years since Takakura’s death, Oda reflected, "It has felt simultaneously quick and incredibly drawn out. A lot has transpired, ensuring I will never forget him. Each day was infused with memories of our life, and I continue to honor what we shared."
Oda’s heartfelt celebration of Takakura's life and legacy through her forthcoming appearance is sure to resonate deeply with fans of the beloved actor. Her memories encapsulate not only the professional essence of Ken Takakura, but also the personal warmth of their shared life.
