Attempted Murder At Ehime Hotel Shakes Local Community

Seventy-year-old hotel owner attacked, police arrest suspect after investigation

A disturbing incident unfolded at the Business Station Akayane hotel in Saijo, Ehime, where 70-year-old Chizuru Shuto was discovered unconscious with severe head injuries on February 22. Local law enforcement is treating the case as attempted murder, and the suspected assailant, Hiroshi Iiwaki, 43, was arrested the following day under extensive investigation.

The assault is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. on February 21 and 2 a.m. on February 22. Reports indicate Shuto suffered multiple blunt force injuries to her head, and local authorities found bloodstains was present at the scene. Iiwaki allegedly struck her with what is suspected to be a bloodied glass ashtray. He fled the scene but was captured later after showing up at a law office, where his actions raised alarm. This prompted the staff to contact the police.

Shuto, who was unconscious upon transportation to the hospital, is currently receiving treatment for her injuries, which include skull fractures and significant trauma to the left side of her face. According to the police, Iiwaki confronts charges of attempted murder. Although Iiwaki admits to assaulting Shuto, he denies any premeditated intent to kill her.

The initial discovery of the crime took place following emergency calls from relatives, indicating Shuto was found bleeding heavily on the hotel premises. Witnesses reported Shuto was calmly tending to the hotel until she was violently attacked, which has now raised questions about the events and potential motives underlying the assault.

The police began their investigation swiftly, examining CCTV footage and interviewing hotel staff and family members. It’s been revealed from one of these staff members, who preferred to remain anonymous, came forward indicating Shuto was known as diligent and reserved—qualities she exemplified throughout her time operating the hotel. 'People often said she was quiet, dedicated, and always willing to help others,' remarked one of her employees.

Despite minimal hotel guests at nighttime, which the hotel staff indicated had largely reduced to just long-term residents, no visible looting or theft was reported. This absence of robbery motives alongside the violent nature of the attack has led police to contemplate personal grievances as potential triggers. Reports suggest Shuto had lending disputes with several individuals, raising the possibility of motive tied directly to her financial dealings.

Local businesses and residents were shaken by the attack, feeling the need for increased safety awareness across their community. The Saijo police department has intensified patrols around the hotel and nearby areas, aiming to deter any potential future incidents.

With suspicions of Iiwaki having familiarity with Shuto, the case opens the door to more inquiries about their relationship—a thread of inquiry police are aggressively pursuing. Iiwaki's confession of partaking in the altercation has deepened investigators' focus on motives tied to personal enmity rather than robbery. The police remain adamant about maintaining public safety, assuring the community of their diligence.

While the investigation is still underway, the health and recovery of Chizuru Shuto lay at the forefront of many minds. The community continues to hope for her healing as they await answers surrounding this horrific act of violence.

The chilling aspects of this incident reveal not just the vulnerabilities of hospitality workers but also highlight potential dark undercurrents within personal financial disputes. The Saijo police's forthcoming updates may shed light on whether the motive truly lies within private grievances or if unforeseen elements played roles within this tragic occurrence. Authorities advise residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity as they work to piece together the full story behind the assault at the Business Station Akayane.
