Switzerland Launches World’s Steepest Cable Car

The new cable car reduces travel time between Stechelberg and Mürren, enhancing local tourism.

Switzerland unveiled its latest engineering marvel, the world’s steepest cable car, on December 13, 2023, capturing the attention of adventure seekers and tourists alike. This innovative connection between the village of Stechelberg at 1,650 meters above sea level and Mürren offers breathtaking views and the promise of improved accessibility to the region.

The cable car, with an astonishing incline of 159.4%, ascends 775 meters over nearly 1,194 meters of track, but the entire ride lasts just four minutes. This impressive speed is part of the broader "Schilthornbahn 20XX" project, which aims to modernize the transportation route significantly. Once completed, travelers will find themselves transported from Stechelberg to the peak of Schilthorn, which is known for its cinematic history as the backdrop for the James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,”—in just 18 minutes, down from the previous 32.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this cable car is its fully automated system. According to Interesting Engineering, there will be no staff present on the vehicles; instead, advanced cameras and sensors will continuously oversee operations, ensuring safety throughout the ride. Each cabin can ferry up to 85 passengers and is suspended by technical arms stretching 11 meters, allowing for unmatched stability on Switzerland’s rugged terrain.

Officially opened to the public on December 14, the cable car has already begun to draw attention from locals and tourists alike. With its grand opening, local businesses, including hotels and restaurants, are poised to reap the benefits of increased foot traffic. The region known for its stunning landscapes is likely to see significant growth, not only due to the cable car but also because of the newly established Funifor cable car connecting Mürren and Birg, which opened concurrent with the steep cable car.

The entire Schilthornbahn 20XX project will encompass three phases, with the final segment linking Birg to the summit of Schilthorn expected to be completed by March 2025. This ambitious initiative promises to modernize the entire travel experience within this picturesque area and is likely to become a key driver of tourism as it enhances accessibility to some of the most breathtaking views Switzerland has to offer.

Given Schilthorn's long-standing appeal as a tourist destination, the introduction of the world's steepest cable car marks another significant chapter in its developmental history. It is seen as a catalyst for rejuvenation in the tourism industry, particularly following the disruptive impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Local officials and businesses alike anticipate welcoming large numbers of international visitors to the region.

With modern design integration, breathtaking scenery, and the promise of quick ascents, this new cable car is not just a feat of engineering; it is positioned to be Switzerland's latest iconic attraction. The prospect of enlivening tourist engagement and boosting local economies is met with enthusiasm by all stakeholders.

Regarding the anticipated influx of visitors, many locals are optimistic about the potential for increased business opportunities. They look forward to offering unique Swiss experiences to tourists eager to explore the mountains and valleys. The new cable car is predicted to stir interest from not just avid hikers and thrill-seekers but also families and casual travelers seeking to experience the beauty of the Swiss Alps without the strenuous hikes.

This project, defined by its technical achievements and economic potential, stands as a monument to Switzerland's innovative spirit, combining accessibility with adventure. The first passengers of the new cable car will undoubtedly witness one of the most remarkable journeys through the Swiss mountains—a trip marked by excitement and the promise of unforgettable experiences.
