Evans died on December 21, 2024, after courageously battling complications related to diabetes over many years. His death was confirmed by his representatives, who expressed deep sorrow and admiration for his talent.

Born on March 27, 1942, in Berkeley, California, Evans carved out a notable career spanning over four decades, amassing more than 120 credits across film and television. He was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Leslie Barnes, the air traffic control tower employee who aids Bruce Willis’ character, John McClane, stop terrorists from crashing planes in Die Hard 2. His performance remains one of the defining moments of the beloved action franchise.

His wife, Babe Evans, shared her heartbreak following his passing, stating, “Art was not only an incredible actor but a devoted husband, friend, and source of light to everyone who knew him. His laughter, passion, and love of life will be deeply missed. While our hearts are heavy, we celebrate the legacy of joy and inspiration he leaves behind.”

Evans’ impressive filmography began to take shape with his participation in the 1984 classic A Soldier's Story, where he appeared as Private James Wilkie. The film, which explored racial tensions within the military, was nominated for three Academy Awards, underscoring Evans’ significant impact on the portrayal of complex characters. The movie's budget of $6 million yielded over $21 million globally, reflecting its widespread acclaim.

Throughout his career, Evans showcased his versatility, taking on various roles. He appeared alongside Denzel Washington, as well as starred in films including Fright Night (1985), Death Wish (1974), and The Story of Us (1999). He was also featured on popular television shows such as MAS*H, The X-Files, Walker, Texas Ranger, and Everybody Hates Chris. Notably, he portrayed Mr. Johnson, the father of Ron Johnson, on the popular series A Different World.

His final voice role came last year, lending his talents to the Disney+ series The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Christened as one of Hollywood’s beloved character actors, Evans left behind a rich legacy through his performances.

The sorrow felt by his fans and those who worked with him resounded on social media following the announcement of his death. Screenwriter LaDarrion Williams narrated his fond sentiments, stating, “I was so honored to be able to work with Art Evans on a play I helped write. He was genuine and didn’t play when it came to the art of theatre. Rest easy, playa.”

Directors and fellow actors paid tribute, highlighting the indelible mark he left on the industry. His representatives honored him by stating, “Art was a remarkable talent who touched many lives with his work. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

The outpouring of grief indicates how Evans was more than just his roles; he was regarded as a beacon of light and generosity among friends and coworkers. He is survived by Babe Evans and their son Ogadae, who now carry forth his legacy.

Art Evans’ contributions to cinema and television have created lasting impressions on audiences, and his presence will be sorely missed. His ability to bring depth and authenticity to every character has solidified his place as one of the great character actors of his generation.
