Supermarkets Prepare For Easter Holiday Shopping Rush

Most stores will be closed on Good Friday, but some remain open for last-minute shoppers.

As Easter approaches, many shoppers are scrambling to stock up on goodies for the holiday weekend. However, the upcoming days are filled with public holidays in Germany, leading many to wonder when their favorite supermarkets will be open.

Good Friday, April 18, 2025, is a public holiday across Germany, meaning that most supermarkets will be closed. This day is classified as a "silent holiday," and only a few exceptions apply. While many consumers may find themselves in a bind if they run out of essentials, there are still some options available.

For those in need of last-minute shopping, many Rewe To Go locations connected to Aral gas stations will remain open throughout the Easter holidays. This offers a glimmer of hope for anyone who finds their fridge empty before the festivities begin.

In addition, supermarkets in neighboring countries such as France, Poland, and Austria will be open on Good Friday. Residents living near the border or those vacationing in these areas can easily make a quick trip to stock up on groceries.

As for specific store hours, several supermarkets have announced their schedules for the Easter weekend. For instance, the Tegut Teo supermarket located at the main train station in Aschaffenburg will be open 24 hours on Good Friday. Similarly, the Rewe store at Am Ostbahnhof 9 in Berlin will operate from 7 AM to 10 PM on that day.

In Dortmund, the Rewe To Go at the main train station on Königswall 15 is also open 24 hours. Additionally, Lidl at the main train station in Dresden will be available from 8 AM to 9 PM. In Düsseldorf, the Rewe at the airport (Terminal Ring 1) will be open from 5 AM to midnight, while Edeka at Konrad-Adenauer-Platz 14 will also operate 24 hours.

Shoppers in Erfurt can visit Fleischerei Zitzmann at Willy-Brandt-Platz 12, which will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM. Aldi Nord at Willy-Brandt-Platz 1 in Essen will be open from 9 AM to 8 PM. In Hamburg, Edeka Tamme has multiple locations, with one at Bahnhof Altona (Paul-Nevermann-Platz 15) open from 6 AM to 11 PM, and another at Wandelhalle (Glockengiesserwall 8) open from 7 AM to 11 PM.

In Köln, the Rewe To Go at Trankgasse 11 will be open 24 hours, while Aldi Nord at Willy-Brandt-Platz 7 in Leipzig will operate from 7 AM to 9 PM. Munich's Edeka at Terminal 2 of the airport will be available from 5:30 AM to 10 PM, and Edeka Ernst at the main train station will be open from 8 AM to 11 PM. Finally, Lidl at Bahnhofsplatz 9 in Nuremberg will be open from 8 AM to 9 PM, and Bio-Insel in Stralsund will operate from 7 AM to 7 PM.

However, shoppers should be aware that on Easter Sunday (April 20, 2025) and Easter Monday (April 21, 2025), most supermarkets will remain closed. Despite the fact that Easter Sunday is not officially classified as a silent holiday, stores will not open, similar to any other Sunday. The only exceptions may include some bakeries and flower shops, which might operate for limited hours depending on regional regulations.

After the long Easter weekend, normal operations will resume on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The German Retail Federation (BVLH) advises that the best time to shop is on the Tuesday and Wednesday before Easter, particularly in the late morning and early afternoon when customer traffic tends to be lower.

For those looking to avoid the crowds, it’s best to shop early in the morning, as most supermarkets typically open around 7 AM. The last half hour before closing, especially in stores open until 10 PM, often sees fewer customers. It’s also worth noting that after the Easter weekend, many stores will have discounted Easter items and chocolates available for purchase.

As Easter approaches, planning ahead is crucial for shoppers. With many stores closed during the holiday, ensuring you have enough supplies on hand will help avoid any last-minute panic. Whether it’s a family gathering or simply enjoying the holiday at home, being prepared is key to a stress-free Easter celebration.
