Students Shape Futures Through STEM And Health Pathways

New partnerships and programs provide unique opportunities for young learners and aspiring health professionals

Mercer University is taking significant strides to connect students from technical colleges with career opportunities in health care. Recently, they announced a new partnership with the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG), aiming to streamline pathways for graduates to enter high-demand health-related fields.

According to Mercer Vice Provost Dr. Kelly Reffitt, this initiative is particularly beneficial because it clearly maps transfer equivalencies for students. With enhanced transparency, it allows TCSG students to maximize their earned academic credits as they prepare for careers in health.

The collaboration offers customized health care pathways across the 22 colleges within the TCSG. This design not only acknowledges the existing academic foundation of TCSG students but also positions them for success as they advance their educational journeys.

"Mercer and TCSG have partnered for nearly two decades, creating pathways for TCSG students to achieve their goals," remarked Theo Anderson, Mercer’s Assistant Vice President of Enrollment Management. He emphasized the importance of this agreement, which connects graduates of TCSG programs to Mercer’s health career offerings, helping meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals.

The official announcement took place during the ceremony on August 8, held on Mercer’s Macon campus. Attendees included important figures from both institutions, signaling the high-level commitment to this initiative.

TCSG Commissioner Greg Dozier expressed excitement, saying the signing exemplifies both agencies' commitment to creating seamless educational transitions for students. He praised the partnership's potential to expand opportunities for the future health care workforce.

This partnership not only opens doors for students but also addresses the pressing demand for health care professionals. With the rapid evolution of the health sector, creating such pathways has become ever more critical.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech is similarly paving ways for students interested in veterinary science. Their Veterinary College's summer program offers aspiring researchers hands-on experiences through the Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program, aimed at undergraduate students.

This ten-week program allows students to work alongside faculty on diverse research projects. Each participant experiences various specialties, enhancing their education with practical skills and insights.

For example, students like Kat Shannon found themselves exploring large animals, which broadened their perspective on veterinary science. Such programs encourage exploration beyond their immediate interests, fostering new passions along the way.

Program facilitator Marilyn Ortega highlighted the growth seen among students participating this year. She noted their initial nervousness evolved as they excitedly presented their findings to faculty and staff.

Participatory learning experiences, such as resume reviews and graduate school navigation sessions, form the core tenets of Virginia Tech’s program. Students leave with not only research experience but also confidence heading toward their future academic endeavors.

Shannon’s confidence has soared post-participation, and she candidly admitted it has demystified the graduate application process for her. Overall, the program aims to instill a sense of belonging and interest in pursuing graduate studies within Virginia Tech.

On the other hand, the need for STEM education is gaining traction among younger students as well. Recent reports highlight how educational initiatives are introducing middle schoolers to the possibilities offered through STEM disciplines.

A great example is Ethan Miles from Spring Hill Middle School, who participated in the Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers Summer Program. His experience not only deepened his engagement with STEM but also paved potential pathways toward his aspirations.

During the program, held at North Carolina A&T State University, students received mentorship and engaged with cutting-edge technology. Participants explored various domains, such as artificial intelligence and digital product innovations, to help bridge the gap between education and industry.

Miles was one of ten students selected as Program Ambassadors for the summer 2024 initiative and spoke enthusiastically about his plans to pursue Pharmaceutical Sciences after graduating high school. His engagement reflects the growing recognition of STEM opportunities across diverse populations.

This initiative is reflecting positive trends where STEM education is promoting access and engagement. By participating, students become not only familiar with high-tech advancements but also their potential applications.

Recruitment of the next generation of STEM leaders is increasingly focused on inclusivity, as seen by partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Through focused educational tracks, these programs are shaping skilled professionals to meet future demands.

Thus, both Georgia and Virginia institutions exemplify how educational partnerships can catalyze careers. The future looks promising as these initiatives are likely to inspire many students toward successful trajectories.

By tackling education and career development simultaneously, students are well-placed to meet future workforce needs. It is evident from these stories how coordinated efforts between educational bodies and industry partners can generate significant outcomes for the community.
