Stony Brook Seawolves Fall To Campbell Camels

Breauna Ware shines with 30 points but Seawolves struggle to keep pace

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Stony Brook women’s basketball team suffered another setback on February 25, 2025, falling to the Campbell Camels with a final score of 76-51 at Gore Arena. Despite showcasing impressive individual talent, particularly from Breauna Ware, the Seawolves could not overcome the early lead established by Campbell.

Ware had a stellar performance, netting a career-high 30 points and pulling down seven rebounds, attempting to carry her team through the game. Alongside Ware, Shamarla King contributed nine points and nine rebounds, and Lauren Filien chipped in with five points. Collectively, they accounted for 86 percent of Stony Brook’s points during the contest.

The game started off on the wrong foot for Stony Brook as the Camels found their rhythm early, shooting 85 percent from the field during the first quarter. This allowed Campbell to build up a lead, which reached as much as 15 points before the first quarter concluded at 23-12. Although the Seawolves attempted to counter with their own scoring, Campbell continued to expand its advantage, leading 33-17 at one point.

Stony Brook managed to make strides by going on a 7-0 run, narrowing the gap just before halftime to trail 37-27. Even with Ware’s 15 points at halftime, the deficit was still steep as Campbell controlled much of the game.

After halftime, the Seawolves faced mounting pressure, and the gap widened significantly as they found themselves trails 55-38 going heading to the final quarter. Campbell maintained its offensive pressure and Stony Brook’s hopes of catching up dwindled, leading to the significant 76-51 defeat.

One of the notable aspects of the game was Stony Brook’s rebounding efforts. Despite the loss, they dominated the boards, finishing the match with 37 rebounds against Campbell's 25. Stony Brook secured 19 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second-chance points, which kept them competitive even if the shots weren’t falling consistently.

“Breauna Ware led the Seawolves with a game-high 30 points,” the Stony Brook Athletics reported, recognizing her impactful contribution to the team. The report also mentioned the significant effort on the offensive glass, stating, “Stony Brook cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 19 offensive boards in the game.” These words not only highlight Ware’s performance but also the overall team resilience on the boards.

Looking back, and even amid the disappointment, it’s worth noting, “Despite the loss, the Seawolves still lead the all-time series 3-2 over the Camels.” This historical data might offer some comfort, even though the recent games have not shown favorable results for the Seawolves.

With another game scheduled, Stony Brook will head back home to Long Island to face off against the Delaware Blue Hens on February 28. A chance to reset and gather some much-needed momentum is right around the corner for the Seawolves.

“Stony Brook returns home to Long Island to take on Delaware on Friday,” the team indicated, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming matchup. This clash will mark the sixth meeting between the two teams, and Stony Brook hopes to turn their luck around at home.

The Seawolves, who sit at 11-14 overall and 6-8 in conference play following this contest, will need to regroup quickly. With Ware’s recent performance and King’s consistent efforts, optimistically, they still pose considerable dangers to their upcoming opponents.
