Miguel Poveda Unveils New Cultural Center Honoring Lorca

The center will celebrate the poet's formative years at his childhood home in Granada.

Miguel Poveda, the renowned cantaor, has recently announced the establishment of the Federico García Lorca Cultural Center, aiming to honor one of Spain's most beloved poets. Located at 50 Acera del Darro, Granada, this cultural initiative is seen as Poveda's heartfelt tribute to Lorca, who spent part of his adolescence at this historic address from 1909 to 1916.

Poveda described the project as “one of the most exciting” of his life, reflecting his deep admiration for Lorca. "This center is born out of love and gratitude toward the poet and his homeland,” he expressed via his social media platforms, also noting how the project aims to restore parts of Lorca's history which he believes are “incomplete for the eyes of the world”.

The cultural center is expected to open its doors potentially by April 2023, and it will provide insights not only about Lorca's early years but also about the surroundings and influences during his formative years. The aim is to showcase the life and inspirations of Lorca, as Poveda stated, “We want to show the first years of a teenager who suddenly saw his pastoral childhood urbanized.”

This local history ties back deeply to the García Lorca family's roots, and the specific address is rich with significance. Poveda highlighted the importance of the Acera del Darro house, saying, “The Acera del Darro house is the one with the most memories for Federico for various reasons.” This place served as the backdrop for many significant moments and developments in Lorca's young life.

The center will not only reflect Lorca's legacy but also serve as a living museum, recreatively emphasizing his connections to various places within Granada. This includes iconic spots such as the Alameda Café, known as El Rinconcillo, local singing cafes, the Plaza Mariana Pineda, and even the now-vanished Teatro Cervantes where Lorca first saw the actress Margarita Xirgu. Poveda noted how these locations resonate with the echoes of Lorca's childhood, describing them as gardens of his play and adventure.

Promoters of the center are determined to craft pathways through the streets where Lorca found his muse, effectively tying his literary genius back to the very fabric of Granada. Miguel Poveda emphasized, “From this center, we want to establish a point of departure to display Federico within his city, the place where the awakening of the musician, poet, draughtsman, and playwright occurred.”

This cultural center reflects Poveda's commitment to enriching the narrative surrounding Federico García Lorca, ensuring his legacy is preserved for future generations. Through this initiative, not only will the life of Lorca be acknowledged, but also his artistic impact will be celebrated within the city he called home.

Now, as plans for the center proceed, it stands to be more than just another tourist destination. It promises to be an engaging tribute to creativity and artistry, drawing visitors to explore the cultural heritage of Granada, which is steeped in the legacy of this literary icon.
