Steven Snell Appointed Williamson County Judge Amid Transition

The former Liberty Hill ISD superintendent takes office until November 2026 following Judge Gravell's resignation.

Williamson County, Texas, has a new county judge following the appointment of Steven Snell by the Williamson County Commissioners Court on March 27, 2025. Snell, who has served as the superintendent of Liberty Hill Independent School District (ISD) for the past six years, was selected in a split vote of 3-1, with Precinct 4 Commissioner Russ Boles opposing the motion.

In a competitive selection process, Snell was interviewed alongside three other candidates: Andrew Webb, Matt Powell, and Elvis Lossa. The appointment comes at a crucial time as the county prepares for its budget season, highlighting the urgency for a capable leader to step in.

“I am truly honored to be appointed to this position to serve the citizens of Williamson County,” Snell stated after his appointment. His experience in educational leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the county's governance.

Before leading Liberty Hill ISD, Snell held the position of superintendent at Spring Hill ISD and served as the assistant superintendent for Hutto ISD. His long-standing involvement in educational administration has also seen him participate in various local boards and councils, including the Liberty Hill Economic Development Council Board and the Liberty Hill ISD Education Foundation.

Valerie Covey, the acting presiding officer of the Commissioners Court during the absence of a county judge, expressed confidence in Snell’s capabilities. “The entire court was dedicated to promptly selecting a highly qualified candidate who could hit the ground running as we are in a crucial time in our budget season,” Covey remarked.

Snell’s term will last until the next general election scheduled for November 3, 2026. This appointment follows the resignation of former Judge Bill Gravell, who stepped down on March 10, 2025, to take a position with the Trump administration. Gravell will serve as the Region 6 advocate for the Small Business Administration in the Office of Advocacy, representing a five-state area that includes New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas.

The decision to appoint Snell reflects the Commissioners Court's commitment to continuity and effective governance during a transitional period for the county. As the newly appointed county judge, Snell will be tasked with setting priorities that align with the county's strategic plans and budgetary needs.

This developing story will continue to be updated as more information becomes available regarding Snell’s plans and initiatives as he steps into his new role.
