Stanford Sweeps South Carolina To Advance In NCAA Tournament

Virginia prepares to face Arizona in NCAA Round of 16 match on Saturday

STANFORD, Calif. – Finishing an unbeaten home slate with a win in the NCAA Super Regionals, No. 5 Stanford men’s tennis shut out No. 13 South Carolina, 4-0, on Friday at Arrillaga Tennis Center-Taube Pavilion. The Cardinal improves to 25-5 on the season, the most since winning 25 in 2003, while ending the campaign 12-0 at home. The Cardinal’s NCAA quarterfinals appearance is its first since 2012.

The fourth-seed in the NCAA tournament, Stanford secured an early lead in doubles with a pair of ranked wins on courts one and two. First, the pair of Kyle Kang and Henry von der Schulenburg earned a 6-4 victory on court two over the ITA’s No. 56 pair, while Nico Godsick and Hudson Rivera tallied their highest-ranked victory as a tandem on court one, beating the ITA’s third-ranked pair, 6-4, to give the Cardinal the edge.

A clinical performance was on display in singles, as the Cardinal took all six first sets by scores of 6-3, or better. Alex Razeghi doubled the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court six, earning his team-leading 18th dual win of the campaign. Posting his team-best 21st overall win in singles, von der Schulenburg made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph on court four. Max Basing – who clinched all three singles matches at the ACC championships and five different matches this season – provided the final blow to the Gamecocks, earning a ranked win on court three, 6-1, 6-4.

Basing improves to 18-7 on the season while posting his 55th-career dual win, tying him for 25th in program history along with Bob Bryan. Stanford will take on the winner of No. 5 Ohio State and No. 12 Mississippi State on Friday, May 16 in Waco, Texas on the campus of Baylor.

The Virginia men’s tennis team hosts the No-10 seed Arizona in the round of 16 of the 2025 NCAA Men’s Tennis Team Championship on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 1 p.m. The match is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort. The winner of the Charlottesville Super Regional will advance to the finals site, Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, where they will face the winner of the Fort Worth Super Regional (TCU, UCF) in a quarterfinal match on Friday, May 16, 2025.

The Cavaliers (22-7) are looking for their seventh NCAA title, having won back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023. This is UVA’s 21st straight NCAA Championship appearance, and they have advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 in 19 of the last 20 championships, reaching the quarterfinals in 17 of the last 19.

Virginia is the No. 7 seed in this year’s tournament and is currently ranked No. 4 in the latest ITA Team Rankings. The Cavaliers swept both Bucknell and Princeton 4-0 last weekend in Charlottesville to reach the Round of 16, boasting nine wins over opponents currently in the top 30 of the ITA Team Rankings.

Sophomore Dylan Dietrich is tied for the team lead in singles wins this year with 22, holding a 16-5 record in dual matches with a 10-2 mark playing on court two. He is one of two Cavaliers in the ITA Singles Rankings, coming in at No. 32. Freshman Rafael Jódar is the highest ranked singles player in the ACC, coming in at No. 4 in the rankings with an 18-2 overall singles record this season, including a 14-1 record on the top singles court.

Jódar closed out conference play in the regular season with an undefeated 8-0 singles record. Virginia boasts a 20-4 record on the top singles court this season. Junior Mans Dahlberg is also tied for the team lead in singles wins this season with Dietrich and is currently on a nine-match win streak in completed matches. Dahlberg is 8-3 on court five this year and 7-3 on court six.

Freshman Jangjun Kim boasts a 16-5 record in dual matches this season, excelling particularly on court five and six. Dietrich and Dahlberg lead the team in doubles wins this season with 14, currently ranked No. 31 in the ITA Doubles Rankings. Graduate student James Hopper and freshman Keegan Rice are second on the team in doubles wins with 11, appearing at No. 23 in the doubles rankings.

On the other side, the Wildcats (26-4) won the Big 12 Championship title in their first year in the league and are ranked No. 10 in the ITA Team Rankings. Arizona features two players ranked inside the top 10 in the ITA Singles Rankings: Colton Smith, who won the Big 12 Player of the Year award and is ranked No. 5, and Jay Friend, ranked No. 6.

This match marks the first-ever meeting between Virginia and Arizona, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the contest.

In DII news, the 2025 DII men's tennis team championship selections were revealed on Monday, May 5, 2025, on NCAA.com. The NCAA DII Men's and Women's Tennis Committee has selected the 48 teams that will compete in the tournament. Following the conclusion of region play, 16 teams will advance to play at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL. Single elimination competition begins on May 20, 2025, and continues through the national championship on May 24, 2025.

Valdosta State won its third national championship in program history in 2024 with a score of 4-3 against Flagler in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The excitement is building as teams prepare for the upcoming matches that will determine who advances to the finals.
