SpaceX Polaris Dawn Mission Breaks New Ground

Billionaire Jared Isaacman leads historic private spacewalk and altitude record effort

SpaceX is gearing up to launch its ambitious Polaris Dawn mission, which aims to push the boundaries of what private space exploration can achieve. Set to kick off on August 27 at 3:38 AM PDT, this mission is not only geared toward performing the first-ever private spacewalk but also aims to reach altitudes higher than any crewed mission since the Apollo era, climbing to around 870 miles above the Earth. This strategic venture marks yet another milestone for SpaceX, which is increasingly becoming synonymous with private space exploration.

At the helm of this unprecedented mission is billionaire Jared Isaacman, known for successfully leading the Inspiration4 orbital mission in 2021. He will be joined by three other mission crew members: retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Scott "Kid" Poteet, who will serve as pilot; mission specialist and medical officer Anna Menon; and fellow SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis. Each crew member has undergone intensive training, with the team logging over 2,000 hours to prepare for the challenges of their adventurous endeavor.

During Polaris Dawn’s five-day mission, the crew will operate beyond the confines of the Earth’s protective atmosphere, traversing through the Van Allen radiation belts—areas known for trapping high-energy particles from the sun, which could pose health risks to astronauts. "They're pushing the envelope in multiple ways,", said Garrett Reisman, a retired NASA astronaut, praising the mission's potential.

The spacewalk itself, slated for the third day of their mission, will occur at the staggering altitude of 434 miles (700 km) above the Earth—this is the furthest from Earth any humans will have gone outside of their spacecraft. To prepare their bodies to withstand the dramatic pressure changes of space, the crew will undergo what is called the “pre-breathe” process, which enables them to efficiently rid their bodies of nitrogen. This process helps prevent decompression sickness, also often called "the bends," which can occur if nitrogen bubbles form back to liquid as pressure decreases.

What sets this endeavor apart from previous missions is the absence of airlocks on the Crew Dragon capsule they’ll be using, named Resilience. They will simply open the hatch to space and step out, tethered but fully exposed to the void of space. “We’d say all four of us are doing it—there’s no airlock and it’s being vented down to vacuum inside the spacecraft,” Isaacman explained candidly, illustrating the unique risks they’re willing to take. This mission not only seeks to achieve new altitude records but is also focused on gathering data to inform the future development of spacesuits for longer-duration missions, with Isaacman expressing, "It feels like a huge honor to have the opportunity to test it out on this flight.”

The Polaris Dawn mission aims to do more than just set records; it is also intended to conduct roughly 40 scientific experiments, targeting studies related to human health during extended space travel. This includes areas like the effects of radiation exposure, decompression sickness, and even variations of neuro-ocular conditions, which are known to affect astronauts' vision. Scientists anticipate the data gathered during the spacewalk may help guide future innovations, particularly as space exploration continues to expand with missions intended for Mars and beyond.

This mission falls under the Polaris Program, which Isaacman himself is funding and leading. He envisions this venture as part of three separate missions aimed at testing new technologies and conducting scientific research with significant long-term benefits for future manned missions to the Moon and Mars. The stakes are incredibly high, but the potential payoffs could redefine what humanity is capable of achieving beyond Earth.

SpaceX has prepared accordingly, holding news conferences to outline contingency plans and safety measures to mitigate the unprecedented risks associated with this mission. It reflects not just the spirit of innovation, but also the inherent dangers of venturing far beyond the planet's embrace. Previously uncharted territory will soon become part of humanity's shared narrative as these astronauts set off on their daring expedition.

With female mission specialists Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon aboard the Polaris Dawn, this mission also stands poised to break records related to female astronauts' altitude achievements. Currently, the record-holder for the highest altitude reached by a female astronaut is NASA's Kathryn Sullivan, who flew on the STS-31 mission, reaching 386 miles in 1990. The Polaris Dawn mission not only showcases cutting-edge technology and unwavering human spirit but also seeks to set these historical and gender milestones—further emphasizing the evolution of space exploration and breaking barriers along the way.

Beyond the record-breaking aspirations and technological testing, the Polaris Dawn mission signifies the growing trend of private space exploration, which has gained colossal momentum since the Space Shuttle program concluded.
