MOSCOW (AP) — A Soyuz spacecraft completed its mission on Monday by bringing two Russian astronauts and one American back home from the International Space Station (ISS). The capsule, which is part of the Russian space program, landed safely on the steppes of Kazakhstan.
The astronauts, who spent six months aboard the ISS, included record-breaking cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Sergey Prokopyev, along with NASA astronaut Frank Rubio. Their time aboard marked significant milestones: Kononenko and Prokopyev set new records for time spent in space, completing several scientific experiments, conducting routine maintenance, and even aiding with the ISS's growing list of spacewalks.
Kononenko, who’s made multiple trips to space, praised the experience, stating, "Living aboard the ISS is always extraordinary. You learn and grow with each mission, both professionally and personally." Prokopyev echoed these sentiments, noting how each mission continues to expand humanity's reach and knowledge of space.
NASA has emphasized the importance of international cooperation in space exploration. Rubio, on his part, shared his reflections on the collaboration between U.S. astronauts and their Russian counterparts, saying, "It’s amazing how we can work together from such different backgrounds to achieve shared goals. The friendships made here will last beyond our missions."
