Southeast Asia Faces Serious Measles Outbreaks As Travel Season Approaches

With soaring cases in Vietnam and the U.S., public health officials urge precautions during holidays.

As global measles outbreaks continue to escalate, Southeast Asia is facing a serious health crisis, with Vietnam and the United States reporting alarming increases in cases compared to last year. The latest statistics point to a nearly 100% increase in Vietnam, which has recorded 3,500 confirmed cases already in 2025. In Taiwan, public health officials are sounding the alarm as the cumulative total of measles cases has reached 19, with more than 60% of those cases being imported.

The Taoyuan City Health Bureau has specifically urged residents to increase vigilance as the upcoming Tomb Sweeping Day holiday approaches. This period, often a time for travel, has raised concerns for health officials, who worry that increased travel may lead to further outbreaks.

Vaccination remains a critical tool in this fight against measles. Measles, known for its highly contagious nature, spreads primarily through the air and droplets. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, conjunctivitis, coughing, and a distinct rash that typically follows a respiratory illness. In severe cases, measles can result in complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis, underscoring the importance of immunization for vulnerable populations, particularly those without vaccinations or with weakened immune systems.

The recent data released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that, as of March 14, 2025, there were 308 confirmed measles cases across 15 states, a striking 39% increase in just one week. This sharp rise mirrors trends seen in Southeast Asia, where neighboring countries such as Thailand and India are also urged to remain alert.

Authorities in Taoyuan have reported that out of the 19 total measles cases in Taiwan this year, 12 are imported, including three cases that originated from Vietnam. Additionally, there has been one local case linked to a person who had contact with an imported case from Vietnam.

As the Tomb Sweeping Day holiday is on the horizon, which is a peak travel season, experts advise people to take precautions, highlighting the significance of self-protection measures. Individuals planning to venture abroad or travel domestically should be particularly aware of the risks associated with visiting areas experiencing measles outbreaks.

The health authorities recommend that children under the age of one or those who have not received the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine not be taken to regions where measles is prevalent. For adults born after 1981, it’s advisable to consult with travel medicine clinics before traveling to any outbreak areas to determine the necessity for vaccination.

In addition to vaccination, practicing good hygiene is vital—thorough handwashing, avoiding touching the face, and wearing masks in crowded places can significantly reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

Ho Chi Minh City is also ramping up efforts to control the measles epidemic, establishing a comprehensive plan that aims to detect, investigate, and respond to all newly emerging diseases and infections. This plan includes organizational and management strategies, alongside technological solutions designed to enhance public health response capabilities.

Underpinning these efforts is a focus on maintaining the progress made in eradicating polio and eliminating neonatal tetanus while ensuring a high vaccination coverage rate as stipulated in the public health guidelines.

Public health officials emphasize that if symptoms resembling measles arise, individuals should wear masks and seek medical attention promptly, while also informing healthcare providers of recent travel histories. This cooperation can significantly aid in managing cases and preventing further spread of the virus.

In light of these challenges, the Taoyuan City Health Bureau remains available to assist residents with concerns regarding travel or measles-related queries. They encourage individuals to utilize their consultation hotline at 1999 or the dedicated epidemic prevention line at 0800-033-355 for guidance.

The ongoing measles crisis serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased vigilance as travel rates rise and outbreaks continue to spread in various regions.
