South Korea Faces Bitter Cold And Snowy Weather

Morning temperatures plummet across the country with health and safety warnings in effect.

As South Korea wakes up on March 19, 2025, the nation is gripped by frigid temperatures and winter conditions that have become a characteristic feature of the season. Many areas across the country are experiencing morning lows below zero degrees Celsius, with forecasts predicting a cold and snowy day ahead.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has issued several alerts, cautioning residents about potential challenges posed by the weather. Expected morning temperatures range from -7 to 2 degrees Celsius, while afternoon highs are forecasted to rise slightly but remain low at around 6 to 11 degrees Celsius in most regions.

According to the KMA, the combination of strong northern winds and a flow of cold air has contributed to the drop in temperatures, making it crucial for individuals to protect their health during this chilly spell. "The wind will blow strongly, making the sensible temperature even lower, so be careful about health," warned the KMA.

Snowfall is expected in various regions, particularly mountainous areas. A heavy snow warning has been implemented for regions including Gangwon Central and Southern East Coast, where snow accumulations may reach between 1 to 5 cm. Reports indicate that in specific areas, such as Gangwon's mountainous regions, snowfall rates may be as high as 7 cm per hour.

Additionally, light rain or snow is predicted until early morning of March 19 in the Daejeon and Chungcheong areas, further complicating travel conditions. From the early hours until dawn, residents might encounter slippery roads as the forecast includes precipitation that may lead to reduced visibility.

This weather alert is particularly pertinent for the coastal regions as well, where wave heights are expected to peak at 1.5 to 4.0 meters, with some areas experiencing even higher swells. The KMA has cautioned that high waves could disrupt maritime activities and recommended that vessels exercise extreme caution while at sea, especially given the strong winds forecasted to be between 30 to 75 km/h.

As people head out for their morning commutes, an expected dip in temperatures is likely to affect their travel routines. According to local forecasts, ranges of low temperatures include -2 in Seoul, -4 in Chuncheon, and seasonal highs that can barely breach the double-digit mark, including only 10 degrees Celsius forecasted in Busan.

Despite the chilly conditions, air quality remains manageable overall, categorized as 'normal' across the majority of regions. However, temporary spikes in fine dust levels have been anticipated in certain areas, prompting additional health advisories.

The KMA has advised residents to remain prepared for adverse conditions as cold air continues to sweep down from the north, leading to morning temperatures remaining below zero through March 20. As this cold snap persists, there will be a gradual warming trend expected, yet it will still be cooler than average temperatures seen in March.

Looking ahead, the weather is expected to stabilize after March 20, with generally clear skies dominating the forecast, bringing some relief from the biting cold. The morning low temperatures are predicted to rise slightly higher, but for now, South Korea navigates the winter's grip on its cities and towns, encouraging everyone to dress warmly and remain alert on the roads.
