Seville Faces Heavy Rain And Storms As Alert Issued

The Agencia Estatal de Meteorología warns of possible flooding and strong winds across the region.

Seville is bracing for a wet start to April, with the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) activating a yellow alert due to heavy rain and storms expected throughout the region. On Friday, April 4, 2025, the alert will remain in effect until 18:00, indicating potential rainfall of up to 50 liters per square meter in mountainous areas and 15 liters per square meter in urban settings.

The storm, named Nuria, has prompted warnings across several provinces in Andalusia, particularly affecting Huelva, Seville, and Córdoba. With a 100% probability of precipitation, residents can expect moderate to heavy rainfall, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, and rough seas along the coast of Cádiz and Huelva.

According to Aemet, the weather forecast for the day includes very cloudy skies and unstable conditions. In the Sierra Norte and the countryside of Seville, rainfall accumulation could reach alarming levels, with predictions of 50 liters per square meter over a 12-hour period. In contrast, the eastern parts of the region will experience lighter and more sporadic showers.

In addition to the rain, strong winds are expected, particularly in the coastal areas and the Strait of Gibraltar, where gusts could reach between 50 to 70 kilometers per hour. This could significantly hinder mobility and pose risks to outdoor activities.

As the rain begins to fall, the humidity levels in Seville are projected to rise to around 83%, contributing to a mugginess that could make the weather feel even more uncomfortable. Weather experts advise residents to stay informed and take precautions, including securing loose objects outdoors and avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm.

The City Council of Seville has already taken measures by closing parks to ensure public safety. Furthermore, morning fogs and the presence of dust in suspension in the eastern part of the region could lead to muddy deposits with the rain.

Looking ahead, the weather is expected to stabilize gradually after April 4. On April 5, the probability of rain will decrease to 40%, with only minor accumulations anticipated. Temperatures will remain cool, ranging between 10°C and 20°C, while the winds will shift to a lighter breeze from the west.

By April 6, the forecast suggests a continuation of similar weather patterns, with a 40% chance of rain and temperatures maintaining the same range. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on weather updates to plan their activities safely.

Historically, Seville experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, often rainy winters. The month of April typically marks a transition into the wetter season, with significant rainfall concentrated between October and April. The average temperature in Seville is around 19.2 degrees Celsius, with extreme temperatures recorded at -5.5°C in February 1956 and 46.6°C in July 1995.

As the city prepares for the impending storms, the Aemet emphasizes the importance of monitoring weather conditions, especially for sectors such as transportation, agriculture, and tourism, which can be significantly affected by adverse weather. The urgency for accurate weather forecasting has been heightened by the impacts of climate change, leading to increased risks of severe weather phenomena.

In summary, Seville faces a challenging day on April 4, with heavy rain and storms expected. Residents should remain vigilant, adhere to safety recommendations, and prepare for potential disruptions caused by the weather. As the storm passes, the city will begin to recover, with drier conditions anticipated in the following days.
