In a significant milestone for the agricultural sector in Moldova, the family-run enterprise "ROM-CRIS" from Tîrnova, Dondușeni district, has officially become the second poultry farm in the country authorized to export eggs to the European Union. This achievement, realized in 2024, marks a pivotal moment for the business which has evolved from its humble beginnings in 2003 when it started with just 18 employees.
Founded by Tudor Sîrbu, ROM-CRIS has expanded its workforce nearly fivefold, now employing 85 people. The growth of the company has been bolstered by securing three grants totaling 2,625,281 lei (approximately 136,000 euros) through EU-funded programs managed by the Entrepreneurship Development Organization (ODA). These funds have been strategically invested in modern equipment, including high-performance monitoring systems for the chick-rearing facilities, enabling the farm to meet the stringent standards required for EU market access.
As part of the broader agricultural landscape, the company also includes "AVICOLA-TEOVERA," founded by Veronica Sîrbu. This subsidiary operates fully digitized, state-of-the-art facilities capable of raising up to 40,000 chicks simultaneously. The modernization of these facilities has played a crucial role in ensuring compliance with EU regulations, which are known for their rigor.
According to the EU Delegation in Moldova, the country was first listed in EU regulations in March 2023, gaining the right to export processed poultry meat and consumer eggs (category A). The first domestic operator to align with these EU standards was the Moldovan-Dutch company "PB-NORD" SRL, based in Bleșteni, Edineț district. This company received its export authorization on October 8, 2024, just ten days before ROM-CRIS was also granted similar rights.
On November 20, 2024, the first batch of Moldovan eggs successfully reached the EU market, exported by PB-NORD. Currently, ROM-CRIS and PB-NORD are the only two companies in Moldova with the authorization to export eggs to the EU, a testament to the competitive edge and dedication of these businesses.
Reflecting on the journey, Tudor Sîrbu shared, "Those who do not want to do anything find excuses. Those who want to do something find solutions, and they are always there if you look for them." This mindset has undoubtedly contributed to the success of ROM-CRIS in navigating the complexities of international trade and compliance with EU standards.
The recognition of ROM-CRIS as a key player in the poultry industry not only highlights the potential of Moldovan agriculture but also underscores the importance of EU support in fostering local businesses. The grants received have not only facilitated the modernization of farms but have also provided essential training and resources necessary for meeting international market demands.
As Moldova continues to integrate into the European market, the success of companies like ROM-CRIS serves as an encouraging example for other enterprises in the region. The agricultural sector plays a vital role in the Moldovan economy, and the ability to export products to the EU opens up new avenues for growth, innovation, and sustainability.
With the ongoing support from the EU and a commitment to quality and compliance, the future looks promising for the poultry industry in Moldova. As more farms seek to follow in the footsteps of ROM-CRIS and PB-NORD, the potential for increased exports and economic development remains high.
The journey of ROM-CRIS is a powerful narrative of resilience, adaptation, and success in the face of challenges. It illustrates how a family business can thrive through strategic investments, hard work, and a clear vision for the future. As they continue to set new standards for quality and excellence, ROM-CRIS not only contributes to the local economy but also enhances Moldova's reputation on the international stage.
