Severe Weather Hits Greece This Weekend

Heavy rain and wind warnings force regional alerts from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) has issued dire warnings as severe weather sweeps across Greece this weekend, bringing with it heavy rain and thunderstorms. The alarm bells were sounded starting Saturday, December 21, 2024, with the southerly and western regions facing the brunt of the impending stormy conditions.

The severe weather forecast, attributed to specific atmospheric conditions, warns of notable rainfall and sporadic thunderstorms particularly affecting the western Peloponnese, the southern Ionian Islands including Kefalonia and Zakynthos, as well as Central and Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the islands of the eastern Aegean, and Crete. The HNMS has urged individuals residing or traveling to these areas to exercise caution due to the intensity of the rainfall.

According to the HNMS, "Severe storms and heavy rains are expected across Greece today, posing risks to various regions, especially the west and south." This unwelcome weather marks the beginning of what appears to be an extended period of instability. The forecast reflects increased cloud cover and suggests persistent risks of localized flooding as heavy rain develops throughout these areas.

On top of the rainfall, wind conditions are also predicted to worsen. Winds from the westerly direction are expected to whip up to 8 Beaufort, contributing to hazardous situations, particularly along coastal areas. “We advise residents to remain cautious and prepared for sudden weather changes,” added the meteorological service, highlighting the need for citizens to take precautions against potential property damage and flooding.

The projections also indicate snow at higher elevations, which could affect travel conditions across mountainous routes. Authorities are being urged to monitor and assess road conditions all over the country as they brace for the possible impacts before the rainfall begins to abate.

There is some promise of drier conditions returning on Sunday, December 22, 2024, as the HNMS suggests improvements across the country. Although the weather is expected to stabilize slightly, the winds will not exceed 5 Beaufort, providing some relief after this weekend's forecasted rough weather. Yet, as the new week dawns on Monday, December 23, renewed meteorological concerns are poised to develop from the north-west, hinting the respite may be short-lived.

The forecast extends beyond the weekend, detailing varying weather patterns expected to play out across the week. On Monday, localized thunderstorms and rain might return, particularly hitting the western and northern regions, and posing risks of strong conditions again.

With the HNMS stressing the importance of safety, local authorities are set to issue additional updates as the weather evolves. It is advised to stay tuned to news outlets and internal communication services for pertinent safety guidelines and alerts to safeguard against these harsh weather conditions.
