Severe Weather Alerts Issued For Mexico Today

Heavy rains, strong winds, and extreme temperatures are expected across the country.

As the nation braces for a significant weather event, the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) has issued a detailed forecast for March 27, 2025, warning of severe storms, high winds, and extreme temperatures across various regions of Mexico. This day promises to be marked by intense weather patterns that could lead to hazardous conditions, particularly in the northern and northeastern parts of the country.

According to the SMN, low pressure channels over northern and northeastern Mexico, combined with a trough in altitude and a stationary front, are expected to trigger heavy showers and thunderstorms. Regions such as Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas will bear the brunt of these storms, with forecasts predicting very heavy rains that could reach between 75 to 150 mm. These conditions may result in flooding, river overflows, landslides, and other related hazards.

In addition to the heavy rainfall, the forecast warns of wind gusts reaching 60 to 80 km/h, with the potential for whirlwinds or tornadoes in the same regions. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for possible emergencies as these extreme weather phenomena could lead to significant disruptions.

Meanwhile, other areas of the country will experience varying weather conditions. Channels of low pressure will also be present in central, eastern, and southeastern Mexico, interacting with atmospheric instability and moisture from both oceans, which will contribute to additional rainfall and thunderstorms in those regions. Heavy isolated rains are expected in Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, with showers anticipated in places like San Luis Potosí and Chihuahua.

Contrastingly, an anticyclonic circulation will maintain a heat wave across several states, including Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Morelos, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. In these areas, maximum temperatures are projected to soar between 40 to 45 °C, posing health risks associated with heat exposure.

As for the Valley of Mexico, a mix of weather is expected. Residents of Mexico City can anticipate a minimum temperature of 12 to 14 °C and a maximum of 25 to 27 °C, with isolated showers possible. Toluca, in the Estado de México, will see slightly cooler temperatures, ranging from 5 to 7 °C in the morning to a maximum of 22 to 24 °C in the afternoon.

The Baja California Peninsula is set to experience its own unique weather. Morning fog is expected along the western coast, followed by warmer conditions in the afternoon. Winds from the northwest are predicted to reach 30 to 40 km/h, with gusts up to 70 km/h, and waves between 1 to 3 meters high along the coast.

In the North Pacific region, conditions will be similarly variable, with temperatures fluctuating from cool to hot throughout the day. Winds are expected to reach 30 to 40 km/h, with gusts of 50 to 70 km/h, particularly in Sonora where dust storms may develop.

For the Central Pacific, residents will experience a continuation of the heat wave, with temperatures remaining high in Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán, while the South Pacific sees heavy rainfall in Oaxaca, leading to potential flooding and landslides. Meanwhile, Chiapas and Guerrero will experience chubascos (showers) with no significant rainfall expected in Guerrero.

The Gulf of Mexico will also see significant weather activity, with heavy rains expected in Tamaulipas and Veracruz. Winds of 30 to 40 km/h, with gusts up to 80 km/h, could lead to whirlwinds or tornadoes, particularly in Tamaulipas.

In terms of minimum temperatures, mountainous regions in Chihuahua and Durango may see lows between -10 to -5 °C, while other mountainous areas in Baja California, Sonora, and Zacatecas will experience frost with temperatures between -5 to 0 °C. The rest of the country will see milder minimums, generally hovering around 0 to 5 °C in various regions.

As the weather unfolds, the SMN emphasizes the importance of staying informed. They encourage the public to monitor updates through their official channels, including their website and social media platforms, to ensure safety during this tumultuous weather period.

In summary, March 27, 2025, is set to be a day of extreme weather across Mexico, with heavy rains, strong winds, and significant temperature variations. The public is advised to take precautions, especially in areas prone to flooding and severe storms, as the nation navigates through these challenging meteorological conditions.
