Severe Weather Alerts Issued Across Multiple Regions

Thunderstorms and heavy rain expected to create hazardous conditions in the South, South Korea, Türkiye, and Spain.

Severe weather alerts are ringing across various regions, with thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds expected to create hazardous conditions in the South, South Korea, Türkiye, and Spain.

On Thursday, May 8, 2025, severe storms are forecasted to sweep into the southern United States, bringing risks of strong winds, hail, and heavy rain. The National Weather Service warns that significant thunderstorm activity is likely, especially across the Appalachians, where large hail could pose a significant threat. Residents are urged to remain vigilant as conditions could lead to flash flooding and dangerous travel situations.

Meanwhile, across the Pacific, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has issued warnings for heavy rain in South Korea starting Friday, May 9, 2025. They predict that cold air from the northwest will clash with warm air from the south, resulting in intense rainfall primarily affecting the southern regions, including Jeju Island and North and South Jeolla provinces. Jeju Island is expected to see hourly rainfall between 30 and 50 millimeters, while other parts of the southern region could receive up to 20 mm per hour. By Friday night, accumulated rainfall on Jeju Island is expected to reach between 50 and 100 mm, with lesser amounts elsewhere.

As the rain begins to taper off in the southern regions late Friday, clouds are expected to linger over the Greater Seoul region, Gangwon Province, and North Chungcheong Province, leading to intermittent rain showers on Saturday, May 10, 2025. The KMA has also warned of strong winds affecting the eastern parts of Gangwon until Saturday night, with a strong wind advisory issued for Jeju Island and eastern Gangwon Province.

In Türkiye, the General Directorate of Meteorology has also issued a warning for widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall on May 8, 2025. Twenty-two provinces, including areas in the Black Sea, Central and Eastern Anatolia, and southeastern regions like Adiyaman and Diyarbakir, are expected to experience severe weather. The forecast indicates intense local downpours, particularly in the Toros Mountains and parts of Antalya. Additionally, dust storms are anticipated to affect the Southern Aegean and Western Mediterranean, which could lead to reduced visibility and poor air quality.

Strong winds from the south and southwest, reaching speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour, are also forecasted for the Southern and Inland Aegean regions, prompting residents to secure outdoor objects and exercise caution.

In Spain, the state meteorological agency (Aemet) has activated a yellow warning for heavy rain and storms in the Andalucía region, particularly in Almeria province. The warning is in effect from noon to 9 PM on May 8, 2025, with forecasts suggesting accumulated rainfall of 15 mm in one hour and potential hail. Aemet's forecast indicates very cloudy skies with occasional showers, especially in the Strait and mountainous areas, where storms may be locally heavy.

Samuel Biener, a climatology researcher, explained that the current weather patterns are influenced by an anticyclonic blockade in the British Isles, which is expected to lead to increased storm activity across Spain. The European Severe Storms Laboratory has warned of a high probability of large hail in the Valencia and Murcia regions, and possibly in parts of Castilla y León and eastern Andalucía.

As the weather unfolds, residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed about changing conditions, prepare for potential evacuations, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. With the convergence of various weather systems, the coming days could prove challenging for many across these regions.

In summary, severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds are anticipated across the southern United States, South Korea, Türkiye, and Spain, prompting alerts and warnings from meteorological agencies. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepared as the conditions develop.
