According to police reports, the chaos began when a 29-year-old driver was forced to stop at the end of a traffic jam on the A3 at the abbiege lane to the A661. Tragically, a 61-year-old truck driver, who was behind him, failed to notice in time and rear-ended the 29-year-old's car. The collision was so forceful that it pushed the young man's vehicle into the Ford of a 64-year-old driver in front. This chain reaction left the 29-year-old with life-threatening injuries and the 64-year-old seriously injured.
Both injured drivers were rapidly transported to nearby hospitals, and a rescue helicopter was deployed to assist in the emergency response. “A rescue helicopter landed on the Autobahn,” reported Hessenschau, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
The accident caused an immediate, full closure of the A3 in the direction of Würzburg, leading to traffic jams that extended for over ten kilometers.
