Canary Islands Prepare For Heavy Rain This Weekend

Aemet warns of significant rainfall and storms as DANA approaches the archipelago

The Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) has activated a risk warning for rain on two Canary Islands for this weekend, Saturday, March 29, 2025 and Sunday, March 30, 2025, due to an approaching DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos). This phenomenon is set to increase atmospheric instability, particularly affecting the western islands, during the weekend.

The warning specifically targets the peaks, east and west of La Palma, from 15:00 on Saturday until 11:59 on Sunday. Aemet forecasts that precipitation could reach up to 20 liters per square meter per hour, especially in inland areas and on the eastern slopes. El Hierro will experience similar conditions, with a maximum accumulated precipitation of 15 liters per square meter per hour during the same timeframe, particularly in its interior regions.

On Friday, March 28, 2025, residents of La Palma and El Hierro can expect cloudy intervals and predominantly overcast skies during the central hours of the day. Aemet has already indicated that strong and localized showers are likely, particularly in these two islands. The arrival of the DANA is expected to further enhance the likelihood of intense rainfall over the weekend.

According to the weather forecast for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the day will start with a very cloudy environment featuring minimal rain. By 06:00, the cloud cover will begin to diminish, leading to intervals of clouds throughout the day. Weak rain is anticipated to leave about 0.1 liters per square meter around 10:00 and again at 14:00. There is also a possibility of storms in the first half of the day, with many expecting them to occur in the afternoon.

The temperatures on Friday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are expected to reach a maximum of 21 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 17 degrees Celsius. Looking ahead to Saturday, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy from dawn until noon, with a gradual increase in cloudiness leading to rain beginning around 12:00. The maximum temperature will remain stable, with the minimum continuing around the previous day's levels, registering a thermal sensation of 22 degrees maximum and 16 degrees minimum.

As for Sunday, March 30, 2025, temperatures are projected to exceed 23 degrees Celsius. In the Canary Islands, especially in the eastern islands like Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, temperatures could reach as high as 28 degrees Celsius. This weather pattern is in stark contrast to the general conditions expected across mainland Spain, where sunny weather will prevail.

In mainland Spain, the weather forecast for Friday indicates that sunny conditions will dominate most regions, except for the Cantabrian provinces, the Pyrenees, and the archipelagos, where rain is expected. Temperatures are set to exceed 20 degrees Celsius in the southern peninsula, the Mediterranean coast, and the Canary Islands.

The Aemet has predicted that stability will continue to prevail across the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with clear skies in the south and some low morning clouds in the north that will dissipate as the day progresses. However, in the northernmost regions, overcast skies will lead to scattered rain, particularly in the eastern Cantabrian region and the Pyrenees, where rainfall is expected to intensify by the end of the day.

As the weekend approaches, a similar weather pattern is anticipated, with stable conditions overall but rain confined to the extreme north and isolated showers in the interior of the northern half and the Balearic Islands. While there is some uncertainty, it is expected that temperatures will drop in the northern half and rise in the southern half on Saturday.

By Sunday, March 30, 2025, a general increase in temperatures is expected, with highs reaching 25 degrees in cities such as Badajoz, Murcia, Huelva, Seville, and Córdoba. Meanwhile, the northern plateau will see temperatures ranging between 15 and 17 degrees. Overall, the Canary Islands are expected to experience high temperatures, particularly on Friday and Saturday, with Lanzarote and Fuerteventura potentially reaching 28 degrees Celsius.

In summary, the weather forecast indicates a dynamic weekend ahead for the Canary Islands, with significant rainfall expected due to the DANA, while much of mainland Spain enjoys more stable and sunny conditions. Residents and visitors are advised to stay informed about the evolving weather situation as the weekend approaches.
