Sanne Vogel and Jan Kooijman, two beloved figures in Dutch cinema, are back together on the big screen in the new romantic comedy Dochters, a film that is both a nod to their previous collaboration and a fresh take on the challenges of family and loss. The film premiered recently, and Vogel, 41, reflected on how their dynamic has changed since they first starred together in Verliefd op Ibiza in 2013.
During the film's premiere, Vogel candidly remarked, "Back then we were glamorous and young, now we are sagging," which brought laughter from the audience and highlighted the passage of time since their last project together. She was the one who suggested Kooijman, 44, for the role, believing it would be amusing to portray a rather dull couple this time around. "I thought it would be funny to play a very dull couple," she said, adding, "But if he were my boyfriend in real life, I would have kicked him out long ago."
Kooijman recalled the phone call he received from Vogel. "She called me and said: I am looking for a terribly saggy, clumsy bum, and then I thought of you. And I found that a very big compliment," he laughed, showcasing their playful chemistry.
In Dochters, Vogel plays one of three sisters alongside Barbara Sloesen and Abbey Hoes. The plot revolves around the sisters and their mother, portrayed by Anne-Mieke Ruyten, who decide to train for a marathon after their father passes away. The film is a remake of a Czech film, and Kooijman noted, "And you can see that, because the film was already well-structured."
However, Vogel admitted that the role was not exactly tailored to her strengths. "I really hate running," she confessed. "So when I was running, I thought it would look very professional, but that turned out to be disappointing." Following the filming, she decided to stop running altogether, humorously stating, "I would love it, but it’s just not for me."
As the film gears up for its release, it coincides with Mother's Day, making it a perfect fit for family outings. Cinema Gouda is celebrating this occasion with a special Mother's Day High Tea event on Sunday, May 11, 2025, inviting families to enjoy the film together. Tickets are still available, and the excitement surrounding the film's release is palpable.
In addition to Dochters, Cinema Gouda has a lineup of other films, including the breathtaking nature documentary OCEAN with David Attenborough and the latest installment of the popular Final Destination franchise. The theater also features upcoming special performances, such as the Royal Opera's Die Walküre on May 14, June 8, and June 12, and the Royal Ballet's Ballet to Broadway: Wheeldon Works on May 22 and June 15.
For those interested in biographical films, A Complete Unknown, a musical biopic about Bob Dylan starring Timothée Chalamet, is currently showing and has been nominated for eight Oscars, though it will only be available until May 5, 2025.
As the release of Dochters approaches, the chemistry between Vogel and Kooijman, their humorous reflections on aging, and the film's heartwarming premise are sure to resonate with audiences. The film not only showcases their acting talents but also serves as a reminder of the importance of family bonds and the memories that shape us.
With a mixture of humor, nostalgia, and heartfelt moments, Dochters is poised to become a favorite among viewers looking for a touching story that celebrates the complexities of family life.
