As the holiday of Lebaran approaches, ensuring safe and reliable transportation for the millions planning their annual homecoming (mudik) is top of mind for Indonesia's authorities. With a series of free transportation programs launched across various regions, local governments are taking proactive steps to prepare for increased travel demand.
In Cimahi, the local Transportation Department (Dishub) is gearing up for this year's mudik program by conducting rigorous ramp checks on 15 buses designated for free service. On March 24, 2025, these checks focused on crucial safety elements, including speedometers, brake testers, and headlight testers, to ascertain all vehicles are technically sound for the journey ahead. Teti Megawati, Secretary of Dishub Cimahi, emphasized, "Yang diperiksa terutama adalah rem, ban, lampu, dan fasilitas keselamatan lainnya, seperti palu untuk kaca darurat." This thorough examination includes an assessment of the buses’ overall safety features, such as emergency hammers for situations requiring immediate evacuation.
This year, the Cimahi government is providing 750 passenger slots across these buses, with one specifically designated for disabled individuals, enhancing accessibility for all travelers. Teti Megawati mentioned that having a total of 15 buses ensures that a greater number of residents can partake in the mudik program, as preparations are set to take place on March 29, 2025. This is an increase in service capacity compared to the previous year, aiming to better accommodate holiday travelers.
In addition to vehicle inspections, the Dishub Cimahi team is also implementing health safety protocols by collaborating with the National Narcotics Agency (BNN). They will conduct drug tests on bus drivers and their assistants to ensure that all personnel are sober and capable of responsibly navigating the busy travel days. “Pemeriksaan ini untuk mendeteksi kemungkinan penggunaan alkohol atau obat-obatan terlarang,” added Teti, reinforcing that passenger safety is the utmost priority.
Meanwhile, in Jakarta, Syafrin Liputo, head of the Jakarta Transportation Department, announced that similar ramp checks have been ongoing since March 21, 2025. He stated that any buses failing to meet safety requirements would have their departures postponed to guarantee passenger safety. Syafrin reported, "Bagi kendaraan yang tidak memenuhi persyaratan teknis dan layak jalan, ini otomatis kami tunda keberangkatannya." His department has also partnered with bus operators and the respective brand agency (APM) to ensure on-site service vehicles are available for immediate repairs at terminals, minimizing any delays due to technical failures.
As an example, at the Kalideres terminal, service vehicles from APM stand ready to handle immediate rectifications from the ramp checks, such as replacing worn tires or fixing non-working equipment. This proactive approach allows buses to depart on schedule even if minor issues are found.
Notably, the Jakarta Transportation Department has prepared four main terminals and three auxiliary ones to handle the influx during this peak season, which opened on March 21, 2025. They also established operational posts, known as 'Posko angkutan lebaran', to assist travelers and facilitate an organized flow of passengers during the busy holiday.
For those registered in Jakarta, one of the noteworthy free mudik programs is organized by PT Balai Pustaka, which is set to transport participants from Jakarta to Cirebon. The program is generating excitement as it provides an economical option for many family-oriented travelers during the holiday. Departure for this service is on March 27, 2025, with early registration opening on March 18 and confirmation processes running on March 23 and 24. Interested travelers must ensure they have not registered with any other mudik programs, as participants are filtered and selected via WhatsApp notifications from Balai Pustaka.
The anticipation for the upcoming mudik programs is palpable, as many Indonesians eagerly await the chance to reunite with loved ones this season. Safety measures are clearly in place to address the transportation needs, ensuring that families can enjoy their holiday without undue stress about travel logistics.
It’s clear that various organizations, both public and private, are fully committed to making this year’s Lebaran mudik memorable and safe for all. With thorough preparations at every level—from substantial ramp checks to health assessments and accessible travel options—the hope is that the spirit of togetherness and celebration can shine bright during this festive season.
