Rory McIlroy Snatches Fan's Phone After Heckle About 2011 Masters

The golfer responds to heckling about past struggles as he prepares for The Players Championship.

Rory McIlroy was involved in a bizarre altercation with a fan at the Players Championship on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The incident occurred during practice rounds when, after hitting his first tee shot directly onto the water, the 35-year-old golfer approached the gallery and asked, "Can I see your phone?" He then took the phone from the visibly stunned fan and walked away.

Social media quickly erupted with recordings of the incident as the fan, who had just heckled McIlroy, seemed bewildered. The heckler reportedly shouted, "just like 2011 at Augusta," referencing McIlroy's infamous collapse during the 2011 Masters, where he had held a comfortable lead going at the final round only to unravel dramatically.

At just 21 years old during the 2011 tournament, McIlroy was leading by four shots but stumbled with triple bogeys and other missteps, finishing tied for 15th place. This season, he has been eager to overcome the psychological hurdles associated with Augusta National, where he has yet to win after four major championships.

This year has been promising for McIlroy, who started 2025 with a triumphant victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro/Am and has remained competitive at subsequent events, finishing within the top 20 at The Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. His preparation heading to Augusta, where he aims to vie for the elusive green jacket, remains intense, especially after the incident at TPC Sawgrass.

Although the reference to his Masters collapse struck a nerve, McIlroy has expressed confidence about his performance, particularly with his putting game. Speaking at TPC Sawgrass on Wednesday, he remarked, "I’d say even the two finishes post-Pebble... have been almost like the worst they could be. I finished bad on Sunday at Bay Hill. I finished bad on Sunday at Torrey Pines, as well." He added, "But the turnaround in my putting from Torrey to Bay Hill was great. I finished, I think, fifth [actually seventh] in putting last week, so to see the turnaround was really encouraging."

McIlroy's responses to the fan incident show his frustration yet indicate his commitment to focus on the challenges before him. His performance at The Players Championship is seen as pivotal as he gears up for another shot at conquering the Masters.

Since his 2011 Masters experience, the historical weight of Augusta has lingered over his career. After coming close, including finishing second at the 2022 Masters, McIlroy is acutely aware of the need to manage both his game and his emotions as he aims for the Grand Slam. With the stakes higher than ever, it's likely McIlroy will face significant media and public scrutiny as he approaches one of golf's most celebrated tournaments.

The altercation with the fan has drawn mixed reactions. Some see it as evidence of McIlroy's competitive edge, unwilling to accept any jabs at his past performances, particularly ones he is still learning to navigate. Whether the incident fuels his fire or becomes another distraction remains to be seen as he heads to Augusta, but as the story develops, McIlroy is determined to show he has moved on from the ghosts of majors past.

With greater focus on his game and intense public attention, all eyes will be on McIlroy as he attempts to claim his first Masters title and complete his career grand slam.
