Romania Faces Uncertainty Following 2024 Election Results

Social Democrats lead as far-right parties gain ground amid political turmoil

Romania's political scene is brimming with intensity as the country gears up for its parliamentary elections, following the first round of presidential voting just over a week ago. The unexpected rise of right-wing populism has shocked many observers, and the recent parliamentary election results have summarized the prevailing political tensions.

On December 1, 2024, preliminary reports hinted at the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) leading the elections with approximately 23.9% of the vote, followed closely by the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) securing around 17.8%. The center-right National Liberal Party (PNL) trailed at about 14.5%, with the reformist Save Romania Union (USR) positioned at 10.9%. With 85% of ballots counted, these results signify the potential for significant shifts within Romania's legislative framework.

This election follows last week's presidential first-round vote where independent far-right candidate Călin Georgescu secured stunning results, propelling him to the forefront of Romania's political discourse. Alongside the booming popularity of the far-right, the electoral atmosphere reflected widespread anti-establishment sentiments among the populace, which could reshape Romania's alignment within the European Union and NATO alliance.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, after viewing the initial exit polls, praised the clear signals sent by Romanian voters, emphasizing their desire for continued investment and stability within the nation. He remarked, "It is an important signal the Romanians sent to the political class." Ciolacu assured voters the country's European orientation would not falter, insisting on the importance of maintaining national identity and core values.

On the contrary, AUR leader George Simion interpreted the electoral results as the people’s push for sovereignty and autonomy over their governance, stating, "Today the Romanian people voted for pro-sovereignty forces… It is the beginning of a new era where the Romanian people reclaim their right to decide their destiny." This starkly demonstrates the divided political climate unraveling within the nation.

The political narrative has also been steeped with controversy. The parliamentary elections took place against the backdrop of allegations concerning irregularities within the presidential vote. The Romanian Constitutional Court ordered the recount of ballots from the first round after accusations of election misconduct arose, potentially skewing public confidence and creating turbulence within the political atmosphere.

The elections occur against pressing socioeconomic challenges facing Romanians, especially considering the EU's highest inflation rates and rising poverty levels. The public's frustration with entrenched corruption among mainstream political parties is palpable, making it fertile ground for the far-right movements to flourish, particularly under the AUR's banner.

Far-right parties have cleverly capitalized on the prevailing narrative against Ukraine's military conflict, stirring fear among citizens by claiming continued support for Ukraine could lead to potential threats encroaching upon Romanian territory. The outgoing president, Klaus Iohannis, warned of the existential nature of these elections, stating they would determine Romania's future as either “a country of freedom and openness” or one succumbing to toxic isolation.

Voter turnout was significantly high this election, with about 52.3% of eligible voters casting ballots, marking the highest participation rate since 2004. This surge is attributed to growing public discontent with established political elites and expresses citizens' urgent desires for change.

Complicative factors, including the interplay between domestic sentiments and potential foreign influence, have permeated the elections. Enhancing the climate of uncertainty, allegations of TikTok exploiting algorithmic powers to favor Georgescu’s campaign ignited discussions about social media’s role within the political narrative. Critics argue his rise is supported by faked online engagement and accusations of favoritism by the platform itself.

With the prospect of fragmented coalitions now looming large, analysts predict the new parliament, if these results hold, could be increasingly difficult to navigate. Given the conservative leanings of the AUR, who more than doubled their results from previous elections, the mainstream PSD and PNL are likely to face complex negotiations to form any semblance of stable governance.

The potential aftermath of these elections could set the stage for Romania’s future as it balances maintaining favorable relations with Western alliances against the populist wave festering within. If confirmed counts reveal trends consistent with the exit polls, the PSD might need to seek alliances with centrist parties, raising questions about how willing these mainstream parties are to partner with each other.

While the groundwork for future governance is being laid, the most immediate concern remains the presidential runoff slated for December 8 when Georgescu will face off against the USR’s Elena Lasconi, pending the court’s rulings on the recount. Observers are closely watching—not only the electoral outcomes but also how public sentiment will continue to evolve amid these fragile conditions.
