Car Crashes Into Chipping Sodbury Christmas Market Injuring Seven

Two young children including a baby were among those hospitalized after the accident at the festive event

At around lunchtime on December 1, 2024, chaos erupted at the Chipping Sodbury Christmas Market located near Bristol when the unthinkable happened — a car veered off course, crashing through the crowd of merrymakers enjoying the festive atmosphere. This harrowing incident left seven individuals injured, two of whom were young children, including one baby, prompting swift action from emergency services.

The scene was described as chaotic, with eyewitnesses detailing how they heard the horrifying sound of screeching tires followed by panicked shouts. The driver, reported to be in his 80s, was attempting to reverse out of his parking space when he struck the pedestrians. Avon Fire and Rescue confirmed the incident occurred at low speed, but it was still enough to cause concern among the attending crowd.

Multiple emergency teams convened at the scene within minutes, resulting in five ambulances and even an air ambulance being dispatched to assist those injured. Fortunately, none of those hurt have been described as having life-threatening or life-changing injuries, calming some of the fears raised during the pandemonium.

Two children, including the baby, were rushed to nearby hospitals for assessment, along with four adults. The initial alarms received around 11:58 AM sent throngs of medical personnel scrambling to provide urgent care. Despite being shaken by the events, many gathered at the market were grateful for the quick response and the overall lack of severe injuries.

Witnesses shared their jarring experiences with reporters. Ady Jones, market stall holder, witnessed the crash. He explained, "There was lots of shouting and clearly people had been injured. The stalls had to close for quite a time, but thankfully, people were not seriously harmed." Esra Ward, who was running a pizza stall, described the car accelerating unexpectedly, hitting pedestrians who had been enjoying the festive day.

The repercussions of the accident were felt throughout the market, but the event continued as scheduled. Organizers took to social media, reassuring attendees the market was still running, stating, "We have been advised by the police not to cancel today's event, so the remainder of the High Street from Hobbs House Bakery down toward Broad Street and Horse Street is still open." They also urged people not to take photos of the incident or speculate on social media as they worked with emergency services. This blend of caution and commitment sought to ease the hearts of those attending.

Local authorities, particularly the Avon and Somerset Police, expressed their desire for any witnesses who haven’t yet come forward to contact them, as they leverage any footage and accounts to unravel the full picture of the event.

Meanwhile, the Portcullis Hotel offered their sentiments online, providing well-wishes to those involved. Their message emphasized appreciation for the emergency responders and the public, reflecting the community spirit and solidarity felt amid such adversity.

While this tragic incident marred the festive atmosphere of what should have been another delightful Christmas market, it acted as yet another reminder of the unpredictability of public gatherings. With the community banding together and emergency crews mobilizing quickly, the hope is for the swift recovery of all affected by this unfortunate turn of events.

For many attendees, the shock of what occurred may linger long after the festivities end, but the unwavering spirit of community and support showcased throughout the ordeal highlights how, even on dark days, people can come together to uplift one another.

Chipping Sodbury's Christmas Market is known for being family-friendly and filled with holiday cheer, and even though this incident occurred, it stands as evidence of the community's resilience. Market goers hope to see improvements in safety measures to prevent such accidents from happening again.

While local authorities continue their investigations, community members remain vigilant — ready to celebrate their cherished holiday tradition next time, under empowered safety protocols. They look forward to putting this incident behind them and ensuring the Christmas spirit remains alive and vibrant, serving as both celebration and reminder of the strength found within their hearts and the wider community.
