Rockslide On Highway 299 Causes Major Delays

Caltrans crews respond swiftly to clear debris and monitor conditions after landslide near Shasta-Trinity County line.

NORTHSTATE, Calif. — A rockslide on Highway 299 near the Shasta-Trinity County line led to significant traffic delays on Friday evening, as reported by local authorities.

According to the Caltrans QuickMap, the incident occurred around 4:22 p.m., prompting one-way traffic control for westbound travelers heading toward Greenhorn Mine Road. Approximately 350 cubic yards of rock and dirt slid down onto Highway 299, obstructing the roadway and requiring immediate action from Caltrans crews.

Public Information Officer Chris Woodward stated, "Caltrans crews have been at the scene of the slide on Highway 299 since around 3 p.m. Friday.” Their quick response helped establish traffic control measures, allowing cars to navigate safely around the debris until the site was cleared.

With the necessary traffic control measures, westbound traffic on Highway 299 faced delays as vehicles were temporarily held. Local motorists were advised to prepare for potential delays, particularly since no detour was available at the time. A Caltrans advisory mentioned, "Temporary traffic control is in place, and motorists should expect delays." This statement rang true for numerous drivers caught behind the rockslide.

The rockslide incident occurred near the bottom of the Buckhorn grade, about four miles east of the Trinity/Shasta County line. Crews worked quickly to clear the rocks and dirt from the roadway, ensuring safety for all those traveling the highway.

After significant efforts, traffic control measures were lifted as of the latest update. Nonetheless, crews remained at the site to monitor conditions and conduct any necessary follow-up work. Woodward confirmed, "Crews are working to clear the rocks and dirt from the roadway and will have crews tonight and tomorrow at the slide location to monitor conditions.” This level of preparedness aims to avert any future complications related to road safety.

While the situation appears to be stabilized, California's unpredictable weather conditions can still lead to new challenges. Landslides like this one can occur following heavy rainfall, which has been the case recently. Residents and travelers alike should stay informed and check the Caltrans QuickMap for real-time updates.

The response from Caltrans demonstrates their commitment to addressing issues swiftly and ensuring community safety. They continue to ask travelers to remain cautious on the roadways, particularly where environmental conditions may lead to additional hazards.

This is a developing story. Further updates may be provided as crews continue their work and monitor the situation along Highway 299.
