Rocket Lab Launches Advanced Radar Satellite For Earth Observation

Acadia-3 satellite enhances real-time monitoring capabilities, supporting climate insights and industry needs

On August 11, 2024, Rocket Lab accomplished another significant milestone by successfully launching the Acadia-3 radar satellite for Capella Space. This mission, titled "A Sky Full of SARs," marks the 10th mission for Rocket Lab this year and its 52nd overall. Just 57 minutes after liftoff, the satellite was placed in its designated orbit approximately 382 miles (615 kilometers) above Earth.

Acadia-3 joins Capella Space's growing constellation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, making it possible to capture high-resolution images of Earth under virtually any conditions—sunshine, cloud cover, or darkness. This ability is particularly useful for various industries, including defense, environmental monitoring, and agriculture.

Rocket Lab highlighted the significance of SAR technology, noting how it allows for detailed Earth observations unmatched by traditional optical satellites. SAR can penetrate through clouds, enabling constant data collection, which is instrumental for industries requiring up-to-date information.

Rocket Lab's Electron rocket, which launched from New Zealand, was praised for its reliability. The 59-foot-tall rocket performed flawlessly, delivering Acadia-3 precisely where it needed to go.

While Rocket Lab continues its pursuit of sustainability by working toward reusability of its rockets, no recovery operations were conducted on this mission. Rocket Lab's focus remains on innovation and reinforcing its leadership position within the small satellite launch sector.

Following this accomplished deployment, Rocket Lab shared its excitement with the public, tweeting, "MISSION SUCCESS for our 52nd Electron launch! Welcome to orbit again, @capellaspace." This adds another success story to Rocket Lab's growing achievements and its commitment to advancing space tech to support the evolving needs of commercial space operators.

These are part of the French contribution to the Atmosphere Observing System (AOS), which involves collaboration with major players, including the U.S., Japan, and Italy. Aimed at enhancing insights about the interactions between aerosols, clouds, and precipitation, AOS will combine data from six satellites and various suborbital platforms.

The C2OMODO mission, established to track vertical air motions and precipitation during convective storms, is expected to provide the first global perspective on these phenomena. By improving weather forecasting and the comprehension of intense precipitation formation, C2OMODO aims to deliver critical atmospheric insights. Airbus plans to undertake this mission from its facilities in Toulouse, indicating its dedication to climate-oriented projects which could redefine future weather and climate models.

Alain Fauré, Head of Space Systems at Airbus, expressed enthusiasm for being part of this groundbreaking mission. He remarked, "Working on climate missions is something important to us at Airbus. Just weeks after launching the EarthCARE mission with Europe and Japan, it’s exciting to be involved with another climate endeavor, this time led by NASA with international partners.” This sentiment underscores the prevalent commitment to elevational cooperation across countries for critical climate data.
