Cards Against Humanity Takes On SpaceX Over Land Rights

The popular game company sues Elon Musk's SpaceX claiming trespass and damage to land acquired to protest the border wall

Cards Against Humanity, the company behind the irreverent, adult party game, has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk's SpaceX for allegedly trespassing on its property and causing damage, demanding $15 million in damages. This peculiar legal battle drew attention after the company purchased the land near the U.S.-Mexico border to help thwart then-President Donald Trump’s ambitious plans to construct a border wall.

According to court filings made last Thursday in Texas, Cards Against Humanity (CAH) claims SpaceX treated its land as if it owned it, asserting unauthorized work has been carried out for at least six months. The land, bought back in 2017 as part of CAH’s campaign against the border wall, has become the center of conflict as SpaceX reportedly utilized the space for its operations without permission.

CAH’s reasoning stems from their purchase of the land during a crowdsourcing campaign, where over 150,000 supporters contributed around $15 each, amounting to more than $2 million. This initiative was not just about acquiring land; it was part of CAH's broader goal to impede Trump's wall-building efforts and raise awareness of the legal rights of landowners threatened by the government’s actions.

The legal troubles began for CAH when they discovered heavy machinery and construction materials near their property. Images presented as evidence show the fill and gravel destroying the natural habitat, which used to host vistas of cacti and other indigenous flora. The lawsuit details how SpaceX allegedly ignored CAH's rights and failed to pursue necessary legal permissions for the use of the land.

“SpaceX’s appropriation of the Property has caused not only devastation to its natural condition but also considerable harm to CAH’s relationship with its supporters,” the legal documents read. The company lamented on their website dedicated to the lawsuit, stating, "Elon Musk just thought he could dump his stuff all over our beautiful plot of land without asking. We won’t let him get away with it.”

CAH’s original intentions were clear: they funded the acquisition to act against the impending wall, which they viewed as contrary to their values. The distress over SpaceX's trespassing reached such heightened levels, it even led to public statements like their pointed response to Musk, “Go f— yourself, Elon Musk. We’ll see you in court.” This campaign of resistance turned the rather simple act of buying vacant land to protest government actions—a stunt of sorts—into the backdrop for one of the most unexpected lawsuits today.

Upon discovering the alleged infringement on its land, CAH claims SpaceX issued them what they termed as “a lowball offer for less than half the property’s value” as they pushed for its acquisition. CAH felt this ultimatum was not just disrespectful but punitive, as they had already invested considerable time and resources to maintain the land.

If they win the lawsuit, CAH has pledged to distribute the proceeds among all their original contributors, with each likely receiving around $100 based on projections from their legal claims. They framed this as compensation for the harm caused by witnessing Musk’s actions on what they had hoped would remain untouched landscapes.

The court documents paint not just the legal contours of this dispute but sketch out the broader aspirations of CAH—taking aim at bureaucracy and large corporations seen as trampling over community values and small property rights. This initiative placed them not just as game makers but activists, aligning their commercial activities with political advocacy.

SpaceX has remained largely reticent, with no immediate public responses from Musk or company representatives following the lawsuit's announcement. This silence aims to keep the focus on the complicated layers of property rights and corporate responsibility rather than detract from the legal disputes flooding social media chatter.

The case taps directly at the heart of significant issues, pointing to the intersections of land ownership, large-scale corporate expansion, and the rights of individual citizens fighting against powerful entities. Musk’s company, known for its relentless push against conventional boundaries, now finds itself facing scrutiny not just from legal spheres but from the very community it operates within.

This peculiar legal saga showcases the unpredictability of the relationships between grassroots movements, commercial interests, and political stunts. Whether or not CAH successfully claims its standing legally will attract attention both as precedent-setting and as part of the broader conversation on land use rights and corporate ethics.

The lawsuit remains under observation, not just for its content, but for what it might reveal about the direction of land rights and citizen activism facing immense corporate governance. For Cards Against Humanity, this may just be another opportunity to merge their game-centric culture with real-world impact, as many curious eyes watch how this confrontation between one of America’s favorite card games and one of its most ambitious tech moguls plays out.

How this legal battle influences the public perception of both parties involved will also likely echo long after the resolution is found. CAH's unusual method of taking to the courts to reclaim their land—once full of wild beauty—has sparked community interest, perhaps igniting broader dialogues about land, ownership, and the responsibilities of influential corporations.

This lawsuit stands as more than just discussions about property damage or legal trespasses; it engages with the raw edges of America’s cultural and political divide, playing out on the expansive canvas of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.
