Riccardo Simonetti Shines In New Season Of LOL

The author and influencer shares insights on marriage and comedy challenges in his debut season.

In recent months, Riccardo Simonetti, a 32-year-old author and influencer, has experienced significant milestones in his life, including his marriage to Steven in late August 2024. The couple celebrated their union with a civil ceremony shortly before Christmas 2024, and in early January 2025, they embarked on their honeymoon in Africa. Simonetti, who is known for his vibrant personality and public presence, also participated in the Amazon Prime Video show "LOL: Last One Laughing," which premiered its sixth season on April 17, 2025.

Simonetti's involvement in "LOL: Last One Laughing" marks his debut in the popular comedy series, which features ten celebrities who are locked in a room for six hours and must refrain from laughing, smiling, or grinning. The show, which has garnered a significant following since its inception, continues to challenge its contestants with absurd scenarios designed to provoke laughter. Alongside Simonetti, notable participants this season include Florian David Fitz, Giovanni Zarrella, and Jürgen Vogel.

In an interview with GALA, Simonetti described his experience on the show as a chance to step outside his comfort zone. "I wanted to prove to myself that I could take risks again," he explained. "It's essential to do things that scare you a little but are worthwhile in the end. That's why I’m a fan of stepping out of my comfort zone, and 'LOL' was just that for me." He described the current season as "unpredictable, diverse, and crazy," reflecting the show's chaotic yet entertaining nature.

During filming, Simonetti humorously considered botoxing his entire face to prevent himself from laughing. Fortunately, he abandoned that idea, stating, "My goal was to make someone else laugh, and I think I succeeded." He noted that Michael "Bully" Herbig, the show's host, was particularly proud of a unique achievement he accomplished during the competition, which he teased but did not reveal fully.

Simonetti's marriage to Steven has brought new dimensions to his life. Reflecting on their honeymoon, he candidly shared that he fell ill during their trip, which unexpectedly tested their relationship. "Our marriage gave us a good taste of 'in good times and in bad,'" he recounted. "I’m a strong person and like to support those around me. But due to some health issues, I saw that I could lean on someone who truly cares for me during a tough time. That has deepened my trust in my partner, and I’m so grateful to have him by my side."

For years, Simonetti kept his husband's identity private, revealing Steven's face to the public for the first time in their wedding photos. He explained, "I didn’t want to reveal him initially. He was fine with it from the start, but I felt responsible for protecting him. It became increasingly difficult to hide him, especially since he wanted to be visible on our wedding day, showcasing that a same-sex marriage can be beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of."

As for their future, Simonetti enjoys sharing glimpses of their life on social media but respects Steven's desire for privacy. "I love showing bits of our everyday life on Instagram, but I think it’s good that I’m the public figure while he can live his life normally," he said. "I try to weigh the right moments to share. It’s a balance we maintain."

Simonetti expressed that their marriage has brought them closer together. "Just sharing the same last name and being recognized as a family legally is a special gift. It’s concerning when I read headlines about certain political parties in Germany questioning marriage equality. I’m grateful I had the chance to marry my husband and feel even more connected than before," he stated, adding that he relishes calling Steven his husband since they exchanged vows.

As the sixth season of "LOL: Last One Laughing" unfolds, viewers can expect new episodes every Thursday, with the entire season available for streaming on Prime Video starting May 1, 2025. The show continues to attract attention for its unique format, where ten celebrities compete for a prize of 50,000 euros for a good cause. With Simonetti as a new addition, the stakes are high, and the entertainment is guaranteed.

This season features a mix of newcomers and returning contestants, including Hazel Brugger and Ralf Schmitz, who have participated in previous seasons. The challenges faced by the contestants are not just about humor but also about maintaining composure under pressure, as they are monitored by 40 cameras throughout the duration of the show. The comedic antics of the participants, such as Jürgen Vogel singing an improvised love song and Till Reiners leading a session of laughter yoga, add to the show's charm.

Florian David Fitz, another newcomer, admitted that the challenge of making people laugh who are trying not to laugh is daunting. He remarked, "It’s not that I lack humor, but it’s a different game trying to make people laugh when they’re determined not to. It’s a unique experience." Simonetti echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of comedy in challenging times. "Given the current mood in the country, shows like 'LOL' are essential. They provide a much-needed escape and laughter during difficult times."

As the competition progresses, viewers will be eager to see who will ultimately succeed in this unique challenge and take home the coveted trophy. With Simonetti's vibrant personality and determination, he is sure to bring excitement to the series, making this season one to watch.
