Rev. Riccardo Battocchio Appointed Bishop Of Vittorio Veneto

Pope Francis announces new bishop poised to lead amid church transformation

Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Riccardo Battocchio as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Vittorio Veneto. This announcement was made on February 24, 2025, simultaneously at the Vatican Press Office and across the dioceses of Padova and Vittorio Veneto, including the Almo Collegio Capranica where Battocchio served as Rector.

Born on August 14, 1962, in Bassano del Grappa, Battocchio has been deeply rooted within the Padua diocese, having been ordained as a priest on June 7, 1987. He pursued advanced theological studies, earning his doctorate at the Pontifical Gregorian University alongside qualifications such as a Diploma in Library Science from the Vatican Apostolic Library. This extensive academic background has bolstered his remarkable career within the Church.

Before his ascension to bishop, Battocchio held numerous important positions. He served as teacher and formative leader at the diocesan seminary, Director of the Padua Episcopal Seminary Library, Vice Dean at the Faculty of Theology of Triveneto, and has been involved with the Italian Theological Association since 2004, becoming its president consecutively from 2019 to 2023. Most recently, he was appointed Rector of Almo Collegio Capranica, situated in Rome, before his current appointment.

His appointment follows the departure of Monsignor Corrado Pizziolo, who recently embarked on a missionary endeavor to Brazil after guiding the Vittorio Veneto diocese for 17 years. Pizziolo expressed gratitude during his farewell to the community, marking the end of his dedicated service.

Reflecting on his new responsibilities, Battocchio shared, “Pope Francis has called me to be bishop of the Church of God which is in Vittorio Veneto. I have said my yes with trepidation but also with serene trust.” His message signifies both humility and eagerness to serve the diocese.

Scheduled for ordination within the Cathedral of Vittorio Veneto, possibly during the second half of May, Battocchio envisions fostering growth and hope within the community. “I come with the desire to know, cherish, and help germinate the many seeds of hope sown within the Church of Vittorio Veneto,” he stated, emphasizing continuity and connection with the pastoral efforts of his predecessor.

He has committed to collaborating with the local community, expressing readiness to engage not just with ecclesiastical responsibilities but also with various social strata within the vibrant and industrious territory he now oversees. Citing upcoming challenges, he stressed the need for solidarity and cooperation among all church members, which he believes is foundational for successful ministry.

Rev. Battocchio also looks back on his enriching experiences from participating as special secretary during the XVI General Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, where he deepened his insights on pastoral care, ecclesial structures, and the modern Church's mission. He aims to bring this knowledge to his new position.

Expressing heartfelt sentiments, he extended his gratitude to Monsignor Martino Zagonel, the diocesan administrator, stating, “I assure you of my collaboration and ask for your support.” This highlights his approach to leadership, emphasizing teamwork and mutual support as integral to his ministry.

Battocchio recognizes the significance of his role amid the evolution of the Church, particularly concerning the dialogue with contemporary society. “I have lived through many experiences where giving and sharing created community and faith,” he remarked, promoting unity and community service.

He is also expected to address pressing issues within the diocese, as the territory faces various transformations and challenges, emphasizing the need to adapt and remain relevant to the faith community. His commitment to meet with all members of the diocese, including youth and those experiencing hardship, showcases his pastoral heart.

With his rich background and comprehensive vision, Riccardo Battocchio's appointment marks not just a new leadership era within the Diocese of Vittorio Veneto, but also highlights the continuous evolution of the Catholic Church during these complex times.

The Catholic community awaits his ordination with hope and anticipation for the leadership and pastoral care he will provide.
