Rescue teams have concluded operations following a devastating avalanche near Mana village, Uttarakhand, India, recovering the eighth and final body, according to confirmations by the Indian army on Sunday. The avalanche struck early on Friday, burying more than 50 construction workers under snow and debris.
Initially reported as having 55 workers present on-site, authorities later revised the number down to 54 after confirming at least one worker had left before the disaster struck. The army mobilized drones and rescue dogs to aid the search efforts, which continued through sub-zero temperatures at elevations exceeding 3,200 meters (10,500 feet).
Among the fortunate survivors was 28-year-old construction worker Anil, whose rescue he described as nothing short of miraculous. “It was as if God’s angels had come to save us,” he shared from his hospital bed, reflecting on his harrowing experience. “The way we were engulfed in snow, we had no hope of surviving.” Living temporarily in containers built to withstand extreme weather, they were taken by surprise as the avalanche hit around 6:00 am, causing the ground to shake violently and the containers to slide off.
“At first, we didn’t understand what was happening, but when we looked outside, we saw piles of snow everywhere,” Anil recounted. Others were not so lucky; this disaster resulted in four confirmed deaths, with five additional workers still unaccounted for and feared missing. Vipan Kumar, another survivor, recalled the horrific moment before being buried: “I heard a loud roar, like thunder… before I could react, everything went dark,” he told the Times of India.
Rescue operations proved challenging, as heavy snowfall and low temperatures inhibited efforts. According to Kamlesh Kamal, spokesperson for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, “Rescue operations were slow due to heavy snowfall, and the area remained inaccessible.” Such realities are all too familiar; Uttarakhand has experienced numerous avalanches and landslides, particularly vulnerable due to climatic shifts.
