Remembering The Lives Of Lou Adkins And Charles Denny

Two cherished individuals left lasting legacies through family, friendship, and community service.

Lou Adkins and Charles Denny were two beloved figures whose lives intertwined through family and friendships, leaving indelible marks on the hearts of those who knew them.

Lou Adkins, who passed away peacefully on March 13, 2011, at his home in Paramount, California, battled lung cancer since June 2010. Born on June 18, 1931, to Odbert and Olive Adkins in Davin, West Virginia, he was the oldest of fifteen children. Growing up within a coal-mining family, like his father and brothers, Lou gained first-hand knowledge of hard work.

After graduating from Mann High School, Adkins enlisted in the United States Air Force, dedicatiing twenty years to his country before retiring as Master Sergeant. Lou was also a valiant Korean War veteran who endured two and half years as a prisoner of war before returning home.

His life changed dramatically when he met Eleanor (Norie) Miku, marrying her on July 27, 1957. Together, they raised four children: Bonnie, Scott, Patrick, and Michael, living the typical life of an Air Force family until Lou retired from military service. They eventually settled down in Paramount, where Lou enjoyed his career as Operations Manager for Northrop Electronics.

Described by many as a devoted family man, Lou engaged heavily with his community. He was passionate about coaching kids’ sports, leading baseball and basketball teams, and took pride serving as Commander of the American Legion Post 134 and as Planning Commissioner for the City of Paramount.

Survived by his wife of over five decades, Norie, Lou also cherished his ten grandchildren. He is fondly remembered as someone who loved his family, country, and local community immensely. He will be laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery, with the family requesting remembrances be sent to support children’s activities through the City of Paramount.

On the other hand, Charles Denny, whose obituary surfaced more recently, was remembered by his family and friends for his vibrant personality and generous spirit. While he has passed, the fond memories of his interactions continue to live on with those who were close to him.

Charles, who was born on February 17, 1936, was noted for his warmth and camaraderie. Natalie Stroud shared, “Any port in a storm!” echoing the sentiment of how Chuck provided shelter during Hurricane Irene back in 2011, showcasing his dependable nature as someone who helped others through difficult times.

Friends recounted hilarious memories from gatherings at Chuck and Gayle's home, noting their hospitality during jam sessions and other social events. From the fun anecdotes, it is clear Charles created lasting impressions with his personality—“smart, funny, generous, and handsome,” as lovingly stated by his friend Henry Whelchel.

Charles' legacy also extends to professional wisdom; Daniel Tucci recalled, “Chuck gave me the best advice about my career; I'll always be grateful for it.” This, paired with stories of his love for football and sailing, encapsulates the complex and joyful individual he was.

Although both Lou and Charles have departed this earth, their memories remain alive through the shared love and stories recounted by family and friends. Their lives demonstrate the importance of dedication, community involvement, and the lasting impact one can have on the lives of many.
