Scott Mills Makes Exciting Debut On BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show

Stepping fresh from Zoe Ball’s leadership, Mills aims to captivate and uplift listeners with music and community engagement.

Scott Mills has officially taken the reins of the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, marking his debut on January 27, 2025. The beloved DJ stepped onto the airwaves at 6:30 AM, feeling exhilarated yet overwhelmed as he welcomed listeners to the new chapter after succeeding Zoe Ball.

“Here we go then, this is the Scott Mills breakfast show on BBC Radio 2, and I can't believe I'm finally saying those words,” he expressed during his opening link. With two decades of broadcasting experience at the BBC, Mills admitted to struggling to process this momentous occasion, saying, “I'm still finding it quite hard to process if I'm honest.” He earlier noted how unforgettable it is for someone who once lacked the confidence to pursue radio as a career.

Mills humorously introduced his first song, Robbie Williams’ "Rock DJ," delighting both fans and curious listeners. “This might be the best day of my life, apart from getting married,” he quipped, reflecting on the significance of the occasion. Following Ball's departure after six successful years hosting, Mills aims to inject his enthusiasm and passion for radio to capture the hearts of the audience.

While Mills joyfully kicked off his inaugural show, he shared insights about his goals. The DJ is determined to build genuine connections with listeners, promising, “I want to make this show something I really hope you come to adore and look forward to every day.” His vision involves creating uplifting moments and providing entertainment to help people start their mornings positively. “I want you to reach out and be part of this show anytime you want to,” he added, emphasizing the importance of community engagement.

The show’s reception was mixed on social media, with some listeners expressing disappointment over song choices. One user voiced, “I can't believe Scott Mills' first song was Rock DJ. What a letdown,” juxtaposing the more enthusiastic reactions from others who enjoyed his opening track. This feedback highlights the pressures of transitioning to such a prestigious role within the esteemed lineup of BBC Radio 2 breakfast hosts.

The breakfast show will feature familiar voices alongside Mills, including newsreader Tina Daheley and travel presenter Ellie Brennan. Daheley, who has experience with several BBC breakfast radio programs, will deliver news updates, reinforcing the informative aspect of the show. Meanwhile, Brennan’s expertise will navigate listeners through their commutes.

Mills took time during the show to reflect on some poignant moments from his career and share stories, establishing rapport. He humorously addressed previous comments made about breakfast shows, recalling, “That was a thing I said once on Race Across The World when we had to get up early to do tasks.”

A notable highlight of Mills' debut was the temporary renaming of Stockport train station to “Scottport,” aimed at celebrating this special occasion. Local mayor Suzanne Wyatt remarked on the initiative, expressing hope it would bring smiles to commuters. Reverend Kate Bottley also participated, leading activities with live choirs who sang popular songs with changed lyrics honoring Mills, creating joyful memories for locals.

Listeners were also treated to messages of congratulations from various celebrities. Zoe Ball, who previously held the position, sent Mills heartfelt voice notes, saying, “I keep getting really tearful. I'm so proud of you, I just need you to know.” This camaraderie within the broadcasting community emphasizes the bonds formed over their shared experiences.

Throughout his first show, Mills expressed optimism about making the program iconic, aiming to resonate with listeners from all walks of life. “I want this to be your go-to place,” he stated, focusing on delivering light-hearted moments filled with music. With enthusiasm and sincerity, Mills acknowledged, “I’m going to give it absolutely everything I’ve got.”

The breakfast show, revered as the flagship program of any prestigious radio station, has seen remarkable hosts like Chris Evans and Terry Wogan previously. Though not the most listened to program at present, Mills hopes to bring it back to the forefront with engaging content and innovative segments but faces the challenge of maintaining listeners’ interest amid the changing radio climate—a do-or-die moment for him and his team.
