Remembering Howard Allen And Howard Clayton

Two distinct lives marked by service and passion create lasting memories for family and community.

The legacies of two remarkable men, Howard Allen and Howard Clayton, reflect lives dedicated to service and passion, leaving behind cherished memories for family, friends, and communities.

Howard Allen, who passed away peacefully on December 31, 2024, at the age of 81, was deeply respected for his service as both a Marine and community advocate. His family described him as loving yet firm, with a sense of humor and generosity. "He made it to 81 years this December, and yet, it is true, no life can ever be long enough for the loved ones who remain without them," shared his granddaughter, Nichole Hunter.

Allen was not only remembered for his military service but also for his lifelong commitment to helping those with developmental disabilities. For 60 years, he was devoted to his wife, Carol. Together, they founded HLA, establishing a groundbreaking model for assisting developmentally delayed adults. With compassion, they opened their home to those needing shelter or aid.

A proud veteran, Howard Allen’s legacy extended to the recovery community, where he was well-known for his kindness and support. His passion for assisting others was illustrated through years of service with the New Durham Fireside Group, which he founded. After battling illness, Allen passed surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind children, grandchildren, many relatives, and numerous friends who deeply mourn his loss.

Meanwhile, Howard Clayton, aged 72, who passed away on December 1, 2024, was equally notable for his contributions to cricket, particularly through his work with Yorkshire County Cricket Club. A passionate cricket scorer, Clayton was involved at all levels of the sport. His love for cricket matched his dedication as he served as full-time scorer for the Second XI. He continued to contribute statistics even during his brave fight against prolonged illness.

Clayton had deep roots in the community and had worked as a schoolteacher, where he specialized in teaching French at Morley Grammar School. He became memorable to many for his significant role at Yorkshire, aiding upcoming cricketers and providing statistical analysis for years. "Howard had a passion for Yorkshire county cricket and he will, perhaps, best be remembered for the six years he served as full-time scorer for the Second XI," wrote David Warner, recognizing Clayton's enduring impact on the sport.

His contributions extended beyond scoring; he was also highly involved with the Yorkshire Cricket Board and played various roles, including assistant secretary. He even introduced the Howard Clayton Second X1 Performance of the Season Trophy, which recognized outstanding achievements among young cricketers, such as Fin Bean's record-breaking 441 runs against Nottinghamshire, cementing his place as one of Yorkshire's successful first wicket partners.

Clayton’s funeral was scheduled for January 22 at Lawnswood Crematorium, where fellow cricketers and friends will gather to honor his memory.

It is clear upon reflecting on both Howard Allen and Howard Clayton, they have left indelible marks on their communities. Their legacies of support, service, and passion are worthy of remembrance, encouraging all to value the connections we hold dear. Their stories inspire individuals to lead lives filled with compassion and dedication, reminding us to cherish those around us.
