Record Participation Marks Success Of Vida Activa 2025

The Zamora program for seniors engages 95% of applicants, focusing on health and social connections.

The program "Vida Activa 2025" aimed at seniors has officially launched with remarkable success, as the Ayuntamiento of Zamora announced the selected participants during a ceremony held on October 30, 2023, at the Seminario San Atilano. With 559 applications received for the 530 available spots, the program has achieved 95% coverage of applicants, marking a significant improvement over previous iterations.

María Auxiliadora Fernández, the council member responsible for Social Services and Seniors, emphasized the importance of maintaining an active life after retirement. "La jubilación es el inicio de una nueva etapa en la que probablemente tendremos oportunidad de hacer cosas que no hemos podido realizar antes," she remarked, underlining the program's role in promoting well-being among older adults.

The improvements recorded this year are noteworthy: the previous program, which took place in January 2024, managed only 79% participation, and the earlier offering saw just 66.5% of applicants accommodated. This rising interest has prompted the Ayuntamiento to continue and expand the program. This year, alongside the free workshops, they introduced 370 additional places under the initiative labeled "Tu clase por un euro," catering to the increased demand.

These workshops are not only free but are also strategically built to promote both physical health and social interaction among participants. The message is clear: combating loneliness is as important as encouraging physical fitness. "Estos talleres deben servir también para obtener compañía y recuperar el contacto entre personas que se encuentran en la misma situación, para hacer amigos y evitar sufrir soledad," stated Fernández, reflecting the initiative’s broader social goals.

Fernández also highlighted another dimension of health during her speech, stating, "La salud no es solo un estado físico, sino también mental y social." This holistic view of health indicates the program’s comprehensive approach which goes beyond mere physical activity, reaching out to the mental and emotional needs of seniors.

Overall, "Vida Activa 2025" has successfully offered 900 spots this year—including the aforementioned free and paid workshops—thus reinforcing its position as one of the most anticipated initiatives for the aging population of Zamora. The program's continuous expansion, inclusive aims, and community engagement speak volumes about its importance.

With the Ayuntamiento committed to ensuring healthy and socially connected aging, the continuation of such programs is not just welcome but necessary. It allows seniors to embrace new opportunities, make social connections, and engage actively as they transition through their retirement years. The clear and resounding success of this year’s enrollment speaks for itself, shedding light on the pressing need for initiatives supporting the elder community.
