Record Cold Temperatures Hit Srinagar, Kashmir

Residents face freezing conditions and power shortages amid severe winter challenges.

Record cold temperatures are grapping Srinagar and the Kashmir valley, bringing severe challenges for residents as the city faces unprecedented lows this winter.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of -7 degrees Celsius, marking one of the coldest nights experienced to date. The maximum temperature barely reached 7 degrees Celsius, showcasing the drastic drop and the toll it takes on daily life.

The impact of these freezing conditions has been felt across the region, with locals reporting frozen water taps and power shortages amid the harsh winter. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has taken note of the dire circumstances, cancelling all engagements outside the region to stay and address the pressing issues. He pledged to personally monitor the effectiveness of the power departments during this challenging period, stating, “I have decided to cancel my forthcoming programmes in Jammu & station myself in Srinagar for the next week to personally monitor the functioning of the Power department & other important departments.”

The current cold spell coincides with the ‘Chillai Kalan’ season, which runs from December 21 to January 30—a traditionally harsh winter period for Kashmir. During this time, the valley sees its coldest temperatures, and this year is no exception. The freezing has already affected local water bodies, including the famous Dal Lake, which has begun to freeze over, prompting concerns among residents.

Visuals from the area depict locals gathered around bonfires, draped in warm clothing, as they struggle to cope with such extreme cold. A local resident remarked, “The weather has become very cold... our hands have started freezing and the Dal lake has frozen... this is the first time the city has experienced such temperature.” Another resident warned, “There is very high chance there might be snowfall here.. it is very cold right now. People should take all measures to protect themselves.”

The freezing weather and its ramifications extend beyond just discomfort; they have disrupted daily routines. Residents report challenges with transport due to icy roads and struggling to maintain home heating. The local tradition of wearing 'Pherans'—loose overgarments—has proven valuable, alongside the use of 'Kangris', which are firepots made of willow, providing warmth against the biting cold.

Even as the temperatures fluctuate, authorities continue to prepare for the potential of more snowfall as the IMD has predicted continued severe weather conditions in the region. Residents remain vigilant, aware of the potential for adversity caused by this severe cold wave.

Power outages have compounded the situation, frustrating locals who have long grappled with energy shortages. Reports have highlighted how existing power generation efforts have not fully alleviated the intensive demand during these winter months. For many, the cold becomes not just about discomfort but impacts their health and wellbeing deeply.

Despite the harshness, there is also a spirit of resilience among the community. The age-old practices of heating with kangris and wearing traditional clothing helps sustain warmth during the coldest days. Families work together to manage resources, often sharing coal or firewood to stay warm.

Looking ahead, the community hopes for some respite as the IMD continues to assess the weather patterns and forecast potential snowfall. If the predictions hold true, there may be relief from extreme cold as precipitation could provide some warmth to the region.

Record cold temperatures are not just weather events; they resonate deeply within the fabric of life in Kashmir, shaping routines and reinforcing traditions, as residents navigate the challenges head-on.
