Palmeiras Pursues Bernabei For 2025 Squad Expansion

The club ramps up efforts to secure top talent, eyeing key signings for upcoming competitions.

Palmeiras has laid out ambitious plans to bolster its squad aggressively for the 2025 season, setting its eyes on Argentine left-back Alexandro Bernabei, who has made notable strides during his loan at Internacional. The 24-year-old defender was previously on loan from Celtic, and his impressive performances have caught the attention of the Brazilian club.

Currently, the competition for Bernabei is heating up, as Palmeiras aims to secure his services before the deadline on December 31. Reports indicate the Scottish side Celtic is asking for around 5 million euros (approximately R$ 30 million) for Bernabei, who has been identified as a key target by Palmeiras following his standout performances.

Bernabei's time at Internacional has been characterized by strong growth; he participated in 25 matches last season, contributing three goals and six assists. His pivotal role helped him earn the prestigious Bola de Prata award, recognizing him as the best left-back of the season—a significant accolade for someone who had previously struggled at Celtic.

Palmeiras' recruitment strategy for 2025 is not solely focused on Bernabei. The club has already successfully secured the signing of striker Facundo Torres from Orlando City for more than 12 million euros. They are also on the brink of announcing the acquisition of midfielder Paulinho from Atlético-MG, reportedly for 18 million euros, along with involving players Gabriel Menino and Patrick.

Despite the emphasis on filling various roster spots—including targeting defenders, midfielders, and forwards—Palmeiras sees Bernabei as exceptional value. The board's decision to pursue him reflects admiration for his transformations and performances, indicating shifts from their initial focus areas.

The urgency of negotiations is heightened by Internacional's interest to permanently secure Bernabei. Reports suggest they have issued Celtic with a take-it-or-leave-it deal, seeking clarity on their position. Should negotiations falter, Palmeiras feels well-positioned to swoop in and ink the deal.

Brendan Rodgers, the manager of Celtic, has addressed the uncertainty surrounding Bernabei’s future, indicating it is yet to be determined if he will return as part of the squad. He noted, "I think it’s great he’s gone away and done well...There’s nothing more to add. He’ll finish his spell there and then we’ll look at it come January." This reflects the complex dynamics involved as the January transfer window approaches.

Meanwhile, Palmeiras already boasts options at the left-back position with Piquerez, who has been the first choice after returning from injury. Yet, with performances from their current reserves—Caio Paulista and Vanderlan—falling short, there’s additional pressure for the team to strengthen its depth both at left-back and across all positions.

The arrival of Bernabei, should negotiations with Internacional not materialize, would also assert Palmeiras' ambitions as they prepare for numerous competitive campaigns, including the prestigious Super Mundial. A stronger roster aligns with their goal to retain and regain dominance in Brazilian football.

Paired with their current signings, Bernabei’s potential addition symbolizes Palmeiras' decisive moves to bolster their squad effectively. Given the backing from their investors—specifically Leila Pereira, one of Brazil's wealthiest individuals—there is confidence they can finance big transfers to stay competitive.

Looking forward, the expected integration of new signings like Torres and possibly Bernabei highlights Palmeiras' proactive stance as they gear up for the challenges of 2025. The strategic adjustments indicate not only forward thinking but tangible ambitions to reclaim their place at the top of Brazilian football.
