Qantas Launches Direct Flights To Sapporo For Ski Season

Aiming to make winter travel easier, Qantas expands its network with new nonstop Sydney to Sapporo flights for avid skiers.

Qantas is preparing to open new horizons for Australian snow lovers by launching direct seasonal flights from Sydney to Sapporo, Japan. This new route, which will commence on December 15, 2025, signifies not only the airline's reinvigorated commitment to international travel but also marks its 100th destination, creating significant excitement among avid skiers and travelers.

The three weekly flights to New Chitose Airport will run until March 28, 2026, perfectly timed to coincide with peak ski season. Traveling aboard the Airbus A330-200, Qantas expects to fill over 20,000 seats during the season, dramatically enhancing accessibility to one of Japan’s premier winter destinations.

For those who dream of carving through powder on Niseko, Furano, Rusutsu, and Kiroro slopes, this direct service promises to cut travel time significantly. With morning departures from Sydney, travelers will arrive in Sapporo by early evening, allowing for same-day access to ski resorts. The ability to maximize one last morning on the slopes before returning home later the same day is just one of the many advantages of this route.

Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace expressed optimism for the route, saying, “Sapporo is a winter paradise for Australian snow enthusiasts. We’re thrilled to offer direct access to Hokkaido’s world-class ski resorts.” He noted the strategic scheduling aligning with the much-anticipated Sapporo Snow Festival, one of Japan's most lauded winter events, providing visitors with unparalleled opportunities to experience both winter sports and cultural festivities.

The new flights are not just about convenience; they represent Qantas’s dedication to growing its network to meet the increasing appetite for travel to Japan. Alongside this new route, Qantas already operates flights between Sydney and Tokyo Haneda, with daily services from Melbourne and Brisbane to Tokyo Narita, making it the only airline connecting Australia's three largest cities directly with Tokyo.

“These flights will significantly reduce travel time by eliminating connections through Tokyo or other cities, maximizing time on the slopes,” Wallace commented. This direct service enhances Qantas's already extensive Japanese network, offering eight unique routes between Australia and Japan and accommodating over 1.5 million seats annually.

For winter sports enthusiasts, the new flights represent not just another travel option, but the chance to truly immerse themselves in Japan's renowned winter culture. Sapporo, on Hokkaido Island, is celebrated for its exceptional dry powder snow and vibrant village atmosphere, drawing thousands of international travelers eager to savor the region’s unique offerings. Popular among tourists are the celebrated hot springs located near towns like Noboribetsu and Jozankei, renowned for their relaxing properties.

Wallace highlighted, “Japan continues to captivate Australian travelers, making Sapporo a fitting choice as our 100th destination. This follows our successful launches to Paris, Palau, and Port Vila.” Prior to the pandemic, Qantas maintained operations to Sapporo and received positive feedback from customers, who largely welcomed the quickened access to Japan’s winter wonderland.

To capitalize on the launch, return economy fares will be available through the Qantas website, which includes comprehensive amenities such as checked baggage, meals, drinks, and entertainment. This all-inclusive approach means travelers can focus on their winter adventures without worrying about hidden costs or additional expenses, streamlining the holiday experience.

Qantas's commitment to enhancing travel between Australia and Japan is evident, and the establishment of this Sydney-to-Sapporo route offers Australian tourists new opportunities to experience the serene beauty and cultural richness of Japan's northern islands.

With excitement building around the new seasonal service, snow enthusiasts are encouraged to plan their winter escape and take advantage of the multitude of activities awaiting them. Whether it’s skiing on pristine slopes or indulging in local delicacies during the Sapporo Snow Festival, this direct flight route brings Australia and Japan closer than ever.
