Pune, 25 March 2025: In a transformative initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers, the Pune Zilla Parishad (ZP) has announced a program to send 75 students to NASA and ISRO during the 2025-26 financial year. This groundbreaking step is designed to expose young minds to the world of space research and technology, fostering a strong interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
Of the 75 students selected through a rigorous process conducted by the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), 25 will travel to NASA in the United States, while 50 will have the opportunity to visit ISRO’s advanced facilities in India. This initiative is expected to draw participation from approximately 58,000 students in the 5th to 8th grades from ZP schools.
According to Gajanan Patil, the CEO of Pune ZP, “Many of our students come from rural backgrounds with limited exposure to even urban areas, let alone international opportunities. This program will inspire them to dream big and explore new frontiers in science and technology.” Such experiences are vital to bridge the gap between urban and rural educational opportunities, enabling students to envision a future in scientific disciplines.
The financial backing for this ambitious project is backed by the District Planning Committee, ensuring that the necessary resources are allocated to support these students. Chandrakant Waghmare, the Additional CEO of Pune ZP, further noted, “₹1 crore has been earmarked under the Educational Quality Development subhead in Pune ZP’s 2025-26 budget to fund this initiative.” This financial commitment underscores the importance of enhancing the educational experience for students who otherwise might not have access to resources that foster scientific inquiry.
